양주시립민복진미술관 개관전 ‘민복진, 사랑의 시대’는 한국 현대조각 1세대인 민복진 사후 최대 규모 전시로 민복진의 예술세계를 관통하는 핵심 주제 ‘사랑’의 의미를 살펴볼 수 있는 전시이다. 민복진 유족의 기증 작품 421점 가운데 200여 점을 선정하여 선보인다.
인간의 가장 원초적 본능의 표출이자 삶의 원천인 사랑. 어머니에 대한 그리움은 민복진이 조각하는 원동력이자 사랑 그 자체이다. 그는 조각을 통해 사랑의 확인을 반복하고 타자와 역사에 대한 새로운 인식의 가능성을 모색한다. 민복진에게 사랑은 개인 경험에서 시작된 어머니, 가족에 대한 사랑이 사람 사는 것의 이치와 본질인 인류애로 확장되는 것이다.
앞으로 양주시립민복진미술관은 민복진을 조각가이면서 동시에 그 이상의 포괄적인 차원에서 인류애에 대한 성찰자로서의 숨은 이면을 발굴하고자 한다.
특히 1960년대부터 1970년대 한국 구상 조각이 추구해 온 가족상, 모자상의 표피적 감상과는 차별화된 민복진 예술 연구를 통해 작품의 미술사적 의미와 미학적 가치를 조명하고자 한다.
The opening exhibition of the MIN Bokjin Museum of Art in Yangju, which is entitled ‘MIN Bokjin, the Era of Love’, is the largest posthumous exhibition of the work of MIN Bokjin, an artist in the first generation of modern Korean sculptors, and gives us an opportunity to think about the meaning of ‘love’. Of the 421 works donated by the artist’s bereaved family, about 200 have been selected for display.
Longing for the mother was love itself for MIN Bokjin, and the driving force behind his sculpture. Through his sculptures, he repeatedly confirmed this theme of love and explored the possibility of new perceptions of others and history. For Min Bokjin, love meant that his recognition of love for mother and family, which started from his personal experiences, expanded to the love of humanity, which is the reason for and essential basis of human life.
Beginning with this exhibition, the MIN Bokjin Museum of Art Yangju City intends to discover the hidden side of MIN Bokijn as a sculptor and a person who has deeply reflected on love for humanity in a more comprehensive way. In particular, through research on his art, which has an essence quite distinct from the superficial sentiments shown in the images of family and mother and son pursued in Korean figurative sculpture from the 1960s to 1970s, we will illuminate the significance of his work in art history, as well its aesthetic value.
