국립중앙박물관은 영국 국립초상화미술관과 함께 특별전 ‘시대의 얼굴, 셰익스피어에서 에드 시런까지’를 개최한다. 국립중앙박물관이 2021년에 첫 번째로 선보이는 대규모 해외 문화재 특별 전시로 영국 국립초상화미술관이 간직해온 명작 78점을 국내에 처음으로 소개한다.
전시는 “명성”, “권력”, “사랑과 상실”, “혁신”, “정체성과 자화상”이라는 다섯 가지 주제로 구성하여 초상화가 가진 다양한 의미를 살피는 길잡이가 될 것이다. 전시에 선보이는 초상화는 16세기에 나무판에 그린 것부터 21세기의 홀로그램에 이르기까지 다양한 시대와 형식을 아우른다.
대문호 셰익스피어, 『폭풍의언덕』을 쓴 에밀리 브론테, 스페인의 무적함대를 무찌른 엘리자베스 1세, 찰스 다윈과 아이작 뉴턴, 세계적인 록 밴드 비틀스와 그들을 잇는 에드 시런, 당대 최고의 배우 오드리 헵번, 월드 와이드 웹(www)을 발명한 팀 버너스 리, 데이비드 베컴, 남아공 민주화 운동을 이끈 넬슨 만델라에 이르는 상징적 인물들뿐만 아니라 노예 상인에서 노예로 팔린 아유바 술레이만 디알로까지, 76명의 삶의 이야기를 소개한다.
The National Museum of Korea is joining with the National Portrait Gallery, London to present the special exhibition ‘Icons and Identities from the National Portrait Gallery, London’. As 2021’s first large-scale special exhibition from overseas, seventy-eight masterpieces housed at the National Portrait Gallery, London will be introduced to the Korean public for the first time.
Consisting of five thematic sections – “Fame”, “Power”, “Love and Loss”, “Innovation”, and “Identity & Self-portrait” –the exhibition serves as a guide to exploring the multilayered connotations to be found in portraiture. Ranging from paintings executed on wooden panels dating to the sixteenth century to holographic work from the twenty-first, the works encompass diverse periods and styles.
The exhibition recounts the lives of seventy-six people including the literary colossus William SHAKESPEARE; Emily BRONTË, the author of 『Wuthering Heights』; Queen Elizabeth I; Charles DARWIN and Sir Issac NEWTON; The Beatles and Ed SHEERAN; Audrey HEPBURN; Tim Berners-LEE who invented the World Wide Web; David BECKHAM; Nelson MANDELA; and Ayuba Suleiman DIALLO, a slave trader who became enslaved himself.
