황재형(1952- )은 1980년대 초반 강원도에 정착해 광부로 일한 경험을 리얼리즘 시각으로 그려낸 ‘광부화가’로 알려져 있다. ‘황재형:회천回天’은 1980년대 이후 현재까지 ‘광부화가’의 정체성 안에서 황재형이 집적해온 예술적 성취를 조망하는 개인전이다.
전시명 ‘회천(回天)’은 ‘천자(天子)나 제왕의 마음을 돌이키게 하다’ 또는 ‘형세나 국면을 바꾸어 쇠퇴한 세력을 회복하다’라는 뜻을 지닌 단어로, 예술의 사회적 효용성 또는 변혁의 가능성을 그림으로 증명하려는 작가의 의지를 반영하고 있다. 전시는 ‘광부와 화가(1980년대- )’, ‘태백에서 동해로(1990년대- )’, ‘실재의 얼굴(2010년대- )’ 등 총 3부로 구성되었다.
각 구성별로 시작 시기만 명시한 것은 초기 작업을 시간이 지나 새로운 매체로 다시 풀어내고, 한 작업을 수년에 걸쳐 개작하는 작가 특유의 방법론을 고려한 것이다.
HWANG Jai Hyoung(b.1952) is widely known as a “miner painter” as he has expressed his personal experience working as a coal mine worker in Gangwon Province in the early 1980s with a realistic perspective. ‘HWANG Jai Hyoung: Restoration of Human Dignity’ is a solo exhibition that aims to shed light on the artistic achievements HWANG has made form the 1980s to the present within the scope of his identity as a “miner painter.”
The title of the exhibition, “Restoration of Human Dignity” was translated as ‘Hoecheon’ a word which means “turning around the mind or a son of Heaven or emperor” or “restoring the declining forces by transforming the situation or breaking a deadlock.” This title reflects the artist’s determination to prove the social utility of art or the possibility of transformation through his paintings. The exhibition consists of three sections - “A Miner and A Painter(1980s- ),” “From Taebaek to East Sea(1990s- ),” and “The Face of Reality(2010s- ).” The periods of the sections specify only the beginning without noting the end, taking into account the artist’s unique methodology, in which he recreates his early works with a new medium and completes on work over the course of numerous years.
