춤의 오랜 역사와 특유의 보편적인 성격에도 불구하고, 근대 이전까지 춤 그림은 활발히 그려지지 않았던 셈이다. 그 이유는 춤이 예술의 소재로서 관심 밖에 있었던 점과 움직이는 사람을 그려야 한다는 제작 자체의 어려움 때문이다. 이는 비단 우리나라에만 국한되는 것이 아니라 동서양 모두에서 공통적으로 보이는 현상이다. 춤이 근대기에 회화의 주제로 부각된 이유는 이 시기 시민사회의 발전으로 개개인의 소소한 일상과 주변 등 사적인 내용들이 그림의 주제로 부각되었기 때문이다. 이 과정에서 춤이 인물화의 흥미로운 소재로 주목받으며 본격적으로 그려지기 시작한 것이다. 이번 전시는 이응노, 장우성, 장운상, 이석우, 정탁영, 임송희, 김세원, 장상의, 이석구, 이숙자, 정종해, 김병종, 조순호, 이동연, 권지은 등 우리시대의 대표적 수묵채색화 작가 15인의 작품을 통해 춤의 시각적 경험과 감흥이 어떻게 화폭에 재현되었는지 살펴본다. 각 작가의 독특한 구상과 표현방식으로 재해석된 다양한 춤 그림과 만나볼 수 있다.
Despite the long history of dance and its unique universal nature, dance paintings were not actively painted until modern times. The reason is that people were not interested in dancing as a material of art at that time and it was difficult to draw a moving person. This phenomenon is not limited to Korea, but is common in both the East and the West.
The reason why dance was highlighted as the theme of painting in the modern era is because the development of civil society at this time highlighted the small daily lives of individuals and their surroundings as the subject of painting. In this process, the dance began to be drawn in earnest as it drew attention as an interesting subject of portrait painting. This exhibition examines the visual experience and inspiration of dance through the works of 15 representative ink-coloring artists of our time. You can see various dance paintings reinterpreted by each artist’s unique ideas and expressions.
