‘MMCA 현대차 시리즈 2020: 양혜규 - O₂& H₂O’전에서 양혜규는 ‘현실의 추상성’이라는 화두로 또 다른 도약을 시도한다. 생명 유지의 필수 요소인 산소(공기)와 물은 자연 상태에서는 물리적 현실이지만 인간이 고안한 화학기호에서는 ‘O₂’, ‘H₂O’와 같이 특정하게 추상화된다. 전시명에 사용된 ‘O₂& H₂O’는 인간이 감각하는 경험의 추상적 성질을 미술 언어로 추적해온 작가의 관심사로부터 발현되었다. ‘O₂& H₂O’는 과학적 사실계, 그 사실을 오롯이 인지할 수 없는 경험과 감각을 포함한 지각계, 기후, 재난 등 점차 극단으로 치닫는 현상계를 총체적으로 사유하기 위한 화두이다.
‘O₂& H₂O’는 우리의 현실만큼 혼종(混種)적인 전시이다. 양혜규는 다양한 사회-문화권에서 형성된 지식, 관습, 현상을 초월적인 시공간에서 ‘환상적인’ 시각 언어로 구사하면서, 방울과 인조 짚을 사용한 < 소리 나는 가물家物>과 <중간 유형> 등의 조각 작품 군을 생성했다. 형태적으로 생명체와 기계, 사물과 인간 사이 어느 지점을 가리키는 양혜규의 조각-존재는 설화적 기괴함과 친근함 마저 자아낸다.
Capturing “the abstraction of reality,” MMCA Hyundai Motor Series 2020: Haegue Yang- O₂ & H₂O is an attempt at another artistic leap. For this exhibition, air and water, elements essential to life, are perceived through the lens of O₂ and H₂O, chemical symbols of human invention. The title O₂ & H₂O reflects the artist’s persistent interest in tracing sensorial experiences with the abstract language of art. O₂ & H₂O poses questions to contemplate by the artist in world of scientific facts, the perceptual world including experiences and senses that venture beyond such fats, and the phenomenal world that is gradually pushed to the brink with the climate crisis and disasters.
O₂ & H₂O is an exhibition as hybrid as our reality. YANG takes the knowledge, conventions and phenomena formed in various sociocultural spheres and articulates them in a “fantastic” visual language of transcendental space and time, creating groups of sculptures, such as Sonic Domesticus and The Intermediates, adorned whit bells and artificial weaving materials.
