‘일어나 올라가 임동식’은 현실과 형식에의 저항, 자연교감적 퍼포먼스에 이어 회화로의 여정을 이어온 작가 임동식(1945- )의 예술세계를 조명하는 개인전이다.
전시는 크게 ‘몸짓, 몰입, 마을, 시상’으로 나뉘어 현실과 형식에의 저항, 자연 교감적 퍼포먼스에 이어 사실과 상상을 넘나드는 회화에 이르기까지 당대의 지배적 경향에 휩쓸리지 않고 자유로이 펼쳐온 작품세계를 시대적 흐름과 특징에 따라 구성하였다. 본 전시에서 작가의 아카이브는 기록물로서가 아닌 순수 창작물처럼 체계적으로 수집, 분류, 보관, 연구될 대상이자, 중요한 예술적 영감의 산실로 제시된다. 더불어 영영 잊힐 수도 있던 예술 행위 순간의 재귀적 소환은 단순한 기록이 아닌 시공간을 초월하는 새로운 창작 행위이자 무한한 확장성이 잠재된 결과물로서 다가온다.
RIM Dong sik(b.1945) is recognized as a nature artist in Korean art scene, he has been considerably underrated and there has not been sufficient research about the artist. He has consistently pursued an art world of his own intergrating nature, life, and art as a persistent performer and meticulous archivist to overcome the limits of performance art.
The exhibition is largely divided into four themes: Gesture, Flow, Village, and Poetic Notion. From resistance to reality and convention to performances of communion with nature and paintings that navigate between the realms of fact and imagination, the exhibition is structured to allow viewers to follow the chronological flow and characteristics of works of the artist, who did not conform to the dominant tendency of the time and freely express his artistic vision. The artist’s archive in this exhibition is presented as pure creations to be systematically collected, categorized, stored and studied, as well as a cradle of significant artistic inspirations, and not as records that accumulate like sediments in the deep sea. In addition, the recursive summoning of the moment of artistic act that could have been forever forgotten becomes a new creative act transcending time beyond mere purpose of documentation and a product with unlimited expandability.
