‘화이트 랩소디’는 백색에 관한 전시다. 오랫동안 민족 색채로 작동해 온 백색의 면모들을 지금의 시각에서, 다양한 감각으로 접근하여 백색에 얽힌 집단의 서사와 합의된 시선을 개별적으로 해체하여 바라본다. 전시는 백색이 표상해 온 세계를 전시품을 통해 증거하지 않는다.
백색 사물의 시각적 계보를 만드는 대신 오늘을 살아가는 작가들의 날선 감각과 독자적 해석을 빌어 새롭게 바라보기를 시도한다. 예민한 관찰자이자 번안가로서 5인의 작가(김경태, 여다함, 신현정, 주세균, 최고은)가 초청되었고, ‘화이트 랩소디’를 위한 협업적 시도가 전개되었다. 전통과 당대성, 식민과 탈식민, 로컬과 글로벌, 노동과 수행, 공예적 완결성과 산업적 미감을 오가는 대극의 지점 안에서 다양한 발견과 질문들이 촉발되었고, 다층적 수행과 실천을 경유한 신작들이 제작되었다. 요동과 질곡을 담아낸 랩소디, 즉 광시곡은 끝 지점에서 느닷없이 변주되고, 어느 곁에 처음으로 되돌아오는 우리 내부의 서사를 상기시킨다. 다섯 작가가 포착해 낸 백색의 질감과 온도, 빛과 그림자의 다채로운 분신술은 결국 우리의 이야기를 담고 있다.
WHITE RHAPSODY is an exhibition on the color white. The many facets of white, which, for a long time has been the color of choice for the Korean people, is looked at today using many different senses to explore the collective narrative and agreed upon perspective by deconstructing them individually. The exhibition does not confirm the world represented by white through the exhibited items. Rather than creating a visual genealogy of white objects, the aim is to look at white in a new light by borrowing the current senses and interpretation of contemporary artists.
Five artists (Kyoungtae KIM, Fay SHIN, Daham YO, Sekyun JU, Goen CHOI) are invited to co-work as keen observers and interpreters for the exhibition WHITE RHAPSODY. Within the opposite poles of tradition and contemporality, colonization and decolonization, local and global, labor and practice, craft completeness and industrial aesthetics, various discoveries were made, and questions asked which lead to the creation of new works by way of multilayered practices and action. A rhapsody expresses ups, downs, vicissitudes, and is unexpectedly played in variation near the end which reminds us of our own internal narrative. The variations in texture, temperature, light and shadow of white that the five artists captured are all embodiments of our own stories.
