이집트 문명은 인류문명의 발상지라는 점이나 남겨진 유물과 유적을 통해서 그들의 삶을 추측하는 것이 가능하다는 점에서 학자들에게는 물론 일반인들에 게 늘 호기심의 대상이 되어왔다. 신비롭고 고귀하게 여겨져 온 이집트의 역사와 문화를 직접 접할 수 있는 전시가 한국을 찾아왔다. 한국 박물관 100주년을 맞아 주요 문명을 한국에 소개하는 기획 전시 중 하나인 이집트문명전‘파라오와 미라’는 8월 30일 까지 국립중앙박물관 기획전시실에서 열린다. 이번 전시에서는 이집트 고대유물 231점이 4부로 구성 되어
있다. 이집트의 전반적인 문명을 보여줄 수 있는 석상, 생활용품, 파피루스에 남겨진 글과 화장용품 등 의술이나 화장술이 발전하였던 이집트의 문화가 그대로 보여진다. 또한 절대자이자 신과 동일한 존재로 여겨진 파라오에 대한 경외감이 투영된 상과 영원한 내세의 삶에 대한 염원을 담은 미라들이 주요 전시품 중 일부이다.
특히 다양한 형태의 미라, 화려한 채색으로 꾸며진 각종 관과 발굴 후 붕대의 일부를 벗겨내 내부를 드러낸 미라, X-레이 촬영을 통해 들여다본 미라의 본모습 등을 만날 수 있는 짜릿한 경험이 될 것이다.

Egyptian civilization has always been the object of curiosity to everyone including the archaeologists because of its relics and artifacts and of the fact that it is the cradle of civilization. The opportunity to experience this mysterious and superior culture and history is coming to Korea in the form of an exhibition. The National Museum of Korea is holding Egypt, the Great Civilization in their Special Exhibition Gallery until August 30th 2009 in the series of introduction to major civilizations, celebrating the centennial anniversary of Korean museum. The exhibition will take a tour to the Egyptian civilization with highly developed medical and toiletry arts with the relics such as statues, households, hieroglyphic papyri, and makeup tools that well-present the culture. Also, the collection includes the statues that reflect the Egyptians' awe regarding Pharaoh, the absolute god and the mummies in the hope of eternal life. Especially, this exhibition will be a unique chance to experience various types of mummies, flamboyantly painted coffins and cartonnages, mummies with exposed skin off the bandages and the X-ray image of the mummy within the coffin as well.
