<세 가지 질문 / Three Questions>
제가 인생을 살면서 해온 일이란
그리 대단한 것들은 아니었습니다.
화가로서의 외길을 걸어온 그 길........
항상 동고동락을 마다하지 않고 함께한 친구가 있다면
고독과 지난한 어려움, 그게 전부였습니다.
화업이란 본디 그 결과나 성과가 금방 나타나는 것이 아니었으므로
미련하기 짝이 없을 만큼, 묵묵히, 묵묵히,
기다리고 또 기다리는 길만이 화가가 취할 태도뿐이었습니다.
화가가 무슨 선비이거나 무슨 대단한 정신적 소양을 쌓아 득도한 사람들이
아님에도 불구하고
화가란 이름으로는 언제나 장사꾼이나 중소기업 생산업자처럼,
생산한 물건을 팔러 다닐 수 없다는 게,
주어진 사회 통념이자 딜레머였음을 부인할 수 없었습니다.
쌀 독의 밑바닥을 긁는 소리가 부엌 저켠에서 들려와도,
그림을 싸들고 시장 바닥에 나갈 수 없는 게 화가의 모습이었고
어쩌면 그것이 천벌일 것이라는 생각을 갖게 하기도 했습니다.
그건 하나의 숙명일 것입니다.
모든, 아니 대부분의 화가들이 처한 사정이
저와 별반 다르지 않을 것임을 대충 짐작할 수 있을 뿐입니다.
자식 학비를 뒷바라지 하기 위해
책에 드로잉을 그려넣어달라는 출판사의 부탁을 받고
시작한 것이 어느덧, 50여 권의 책들로 아롱다롱 장정되어
세상에 태어났습니다.
출판사에서 지급해준 드로잉 원화값으로
자식의 학비를 뒷바라지 하는데
큰 보탬이 되었습니다.
아들의 유학 길은 20여 년이나 길고 긴 여정이었고,
그 뒤를 보살피던 저의 손길은 쉴 틈이 없었지만,
마음은 그 누구보다도 부유하고 기뻤습니다.
그는 장성했고, 대학원을 마쳐 글로벌 국제 사회의 일원으로 국익에 일조하는 젊은이가 되었으며,
저는 이제서야 자유를 얻었습니다.
제가 하고픈 저의 길을 갈 수 있게 된 것이
얼마나 큰 감사인지 모르며,
제 생애 가장 큰 기쁨의 물결이 일렁이는 순간이었습니다.
제가 그려댔던 책들은 대부분 세계적인 문학가들의 작품이었는데,
그 중에는 알퐁스 도데, 레오 톨스토이, 생 텍쥐페리, 필립 들헬름,
마르탱 파주<이승재 옮김 정택영 드로잉 문이당>

저의 드로잉들로 꾸며져 출판되었던 책들이 여기저기
흩어져 세상을 돌고 돌면서 알게 모르게 많은 이들의 가슴 속에 고여
그들 정신세계를 충만케 할 것입니다.
그 중에서도 톨스토이가 쓴 단편소설 <세 가지 질문>은
지금 펴 보아도 나른한 저의 정신을 후려치고 각성시키고 있습니다.

The thought came to a certain king that he would never fail if he knew three things. These three things were
What is the best time to do each thing?
Who are the most important people to work with?
What is the most important thing to do at all times?
<인생을 살면서 나중에 후회하지 않을
가장 중요한 시간은 언제이고,
가장 필요한 사람은 누구이며,
가장 중요한 일은 무엇입니까?
왕의 말을 듣고 난 후 은자는 아무런 대답도 없이 손에
침을 탁 뱉으며 다시 땅을 파기 시작했다.>

The Three Questions is a short story by Russian author Leo Tolstoy first published in 1885[citation needed] as part of the collection What Men Live By, and other tales. The story takes the form of a parable, and it concerns a king that wants to find the answers to what he considers the three most important questions in life.

Who are the most important people to work with?
What is the most important thing to do at all times?
Many educated men attempted to answer the king's questions, but they all came up with different answers. The king decided that he needed to ask a wise hermit in a nearby village. The hermit would only see common folk, however, so the king disguised himself as a peasant and left his guards behind to see the hermit. The hermit was digging flower beds when the king arrived. The king asked his questions, but the hermit went on digging rather laboriously. The king offered to dig for him for a while. After digging for some time, the king again asked his questions. Before the hermit could answer, a man emerged from the woods. He was bleeding from a terrible stomach wound. The king tended to him, and they stayed the night in the hermit's hut. By the next day the wounded man was doing better, but was incredulous at the help he had received. The man confessed that he knew who the king was, and that the king had executed his brother and seized his property. He had come to kill the king, but the guards wounded him in the stomach. The man pledged allegiance to the king, and he went on his way. The king asked the hermit again for his answers, and the hermit responded that he had just had his questions answered.
The most important time is now. The present is the only time over which we have power.
The most important person is whoever you are with.
The most important thing is to do good to the person you are with.
