I. 프롤로그

III.

Steven Siegel (USA), Suncheon Weave, 2016, Paper, wood, 225×700×600cm,

Voyage into Paradise

By Sung-Ho Kim, Artistic Director

I. Prologue
The 2016 Suncheon Bay International Eco-Environmental Art Festival took place at the Suncheon Bay National Garden from late autumn flooded with warm sunlight to winter with chilly winds. This art event was organized as a need for an international art exhibition arose in the Suncheon region. The city of Suncheon with Suncheon Bay National Garden has forged a diverse cultural and artistic infrastructures, gaining an international reputation as an ecological city. Thus, this event seeks to be a festival in which discourse on Eco-Urbanism that pursues interaction and coexistence among “nature-man-city” is intermediated and practiced in the language of formative art against the backdrop of the ecological city of Suncheon.

Living up to the 'Eco-Environmental Art” name, this art event encompasses a wide array of genres mainly including “site-specific” art in terms of form and eye-opening works by Korean and foreign artists who have addressed subjects such as ecology and the natural environment in terms of content. This art event invited 58 artists (teams) from 26 countries to share their art predicated upon the two elemental purposes of “contemporary art’s experimental nature” and “the general public’s engagement and communication.”

II. Subject Description
The theme of this art event is Voyage into Paradise. This theme has been set in consideration of the special status of the “Suncheon Bay National Garden.” I have drawn this theme from the term “pleasure garden” among multifarious concepts of a garden. Below are the descriptions of this theme.

<Table 1> Introduction to the theme and descriptions

As examined above in the descriptions of the theme, “paradise,” a garden, which brings nature as a gift to humans, is without doubt a producer of joy. This space is also a place of healing offering humans solace and peace. This is because a garden is marked by its trait as an artificial nature, “nature for humans, nature by humans.”

If so, can this garden be a paradise? It is elementally associated with the essence of Mother Nature in that it unveils a mythological worldview of the underlying ecosystem in which humans were in a peaceful state with animals and plants. As a garden resembles the semblance of nature but it cannot retain all traits of nature, we may question if it really can be a paradise. Accordingly, we need to arrange a journey from a garden to a paradise in order to explore the possibility of a paradise in the garden.

As is widely known, a voyage means “going around and seeing.” This refers to active viewing in movement rather than passive viewing standing still. Active viewing is to appreciate the artistic beauty of non-verbal images through “seeing” or to grasp its verbal messages through “reading.” This transition from “seeing” to “reading” asks viewers to go through the process of perception, recognition, and meaning ii a piecemeal way. That is, “active viewing” is a sensuous, cerebral activity through which viewers undergo a transition from “epistemology” to “semantics.” Any “interaction” with and “critical viewing” of artworks are also requested for this activity.

Humans are usually plagued by wounds, diseases, mental pain, worries, and frustration but no paradise has brought them to us. Humans can live in solace, comfort, and peace in such a paradise. As a myth intimates, humans have forfeited their rights to dwell in this paradise due to their unrestrained desires. After all, humans come to dominate nature but cannot control the provision of nature. Humans are merely parts of Mother Nature so we long for our eternal home, the natural paradise. The environment contemporary humans inhabit is nothing but a lost paradise. How can we get back to paradise? Is a voyage into paradise possible in a garden, in artificial nature?

The Suncheon Bay International Eco-Environmental Art Festival 2016 has announced that paradise is no longer an irremeable ideal space. We are able to invoke paradise in our minds or our surroundings. This year’s art festival invites viewers, who have searched for paradise in the “space of present life” that is thought of as paradise lost, to a voyage into paradise regained. They are able to pack a suitcase for a while for their journey to the “world of paradise lost” (considered to be lost), for their voyage into paradise, garden (artificial nature) à nature à Mother Nature à paradise, for one month.

III. Invited Artist, Composition, Space Direction
The Suncheon Bay International Eco-Environmental Art Festival 2016 invites viewers to a paradise lost. The festival aims to present an effective “showing” in Suncheon Bay National Garden in order to guide viewers to the appreciation of artworks through “seeing” and “reading.” To do this, we have occupied ourselves with “exhibition composition” and “space direction” corresponding to site specificity along with kind “guidelines” for the exhibition themes.

“Participating artists,” who can be said to be the main characters of the festival are 59 artists (teams) from 26 countries. They include Korean and noted foreign artists as well as artists in a wide range of age groups and nationalities who have produced eye-catching works in terms of content and form. These artists are largely classified by continent and nation.

<Table 2> Invited Artists

These artists took part in three exhibitions respectively: Exhibition 1 Voyage into Paradise at Suncheon Bay National Garden Suncheon Bay WWT Wetland; Exhibition 2 Paradise in Namdo at Suncheon Bay International Wetlands Center; and Exhibition 3 Excursion to the Great Garden at Suncheon Bay National Garden. The exhibition composition is as follows.

<Table 3> Composition and Description

Exhibition 1 Voyage into Paradise (outdoor) has the character of a main exhibition, but is not more important than the other exhibitions. As it is an outdoor exhibition, it may consist of large-scale “sculptural installations” and “installation sculptures.” These are mainly works of site-specific art that display ecological aesthetics using natural materials but works conveying ecological messages despite their artificial materials have also welcome. Exhibition 1 is divided into three sections: Section 1 Paradise Lost; Section 2 Paradise Regained; and Section 3 Paradise in the World, led by a story with an introduction, development, and turn. The story is about “a dystopian reality in which people have forfeited their hopes for paradise” (paradise lost), “paradise restored as an ideal world” (paradise regained), and “a reinterpretation of current paradises in the world” (paradise in the world). To rephrase, this can be defined as a sequential story straddling “art seeking a reflective introspection of the current situation of anti-ecological, dystopian civilization” (paradise lost), “art restoring and reconstructing a utopia from the 21st-centry point of view” (paradise regained), and “art reflecting on and reinterpreting a present paradise in the world” (paradise in the world). This story rests only on an introduction, development, and turn without a conclusion because only viewers may reach a conclusion after reviewing artworks by participants. You are advised to view the three exhibitions in order to properly appreciate the artworks on show. However, you are free to look around or view each section irrespective of their order.

The Exhibition 2 Paradise in Namdo curated by Soo-Mi Lim featured artworks in a wide array of genres from painting and sculpture to installation and media art at the Suncheon Bay International Wetlands Center. Living up to its title Paradise in Namdo, this exhibition concentrated on disclosing the warm atmosphere of Namdo, a southern region, while positively presenting a future utopia where man, ecology, and nature are in harmony and critically reflecting on the meaning of paradise today.

Exhibition 3 Excursion to the Great Garden curated by Byoung-Uk Park and Jessy Rahman featured performances part of which encouraged viewers to join in before and after the opening of the festival at the Suncheon Bay National Garden. Exhibition 3 curated based on a variety of studies and research on reinterpretations of Suncheon’s inherited narratives and the relations between the natural environment and humanity aroused a lot of popular response. The messages this exhibition conveyed have remained as very potent memories and materials as any performance is an intangible genre that passes away and remains only in memories after an event.

The Eco Workshop featured an on-the-scene workshop that took place against the backdrop of the Suncheon Bay reed field and a lecture and a discussion meeting by an art therapy expert professor Margaret Carlock-Russo and ecological artist Eun-Hae Jung. An archive exhibition also took place along with the workshop.

The viewers’ participatory programs, which took place as auxiliary events throughout the festival period, are especially worth noting. I’m an Artist, I’m a Photographer, and I’m an Art Critic are typical ones. I’m an Artist, a program in which participants made miniature versions of Roger Rigorth’s Wings was particularly meaningful. I take this opportunity to express my gratitude to applicants to such participatory programs.

Exhibition 2 and Exhibition 3 featured a variety of perspectives toward “voyage into paradise” that are not presented in Exhibition 1. The forum for in-depth discourse at the Eco Workshop and viewers’ participatory programs held as auxiliary events further enriched our understanding of various artistic interpretations offered by this festival.

IV. Epilogue
Winter has already drawn near while writing this essay for the catalogue. After this event comes to an end, our “voyage into paradise through exhibitions” will come to a close. A few works displayed at the festival will be collected and permanently left at the Suncheon Bay National Garden. Thus, “voyage into paradise through exhibitions” will remain deep in our hearts and memories. I hope this voyage into paradise will continue in our everyday life. My expectation is that our voyage into paradise and our concerns for the natural environment and ecology will continue in our daily routines while passing through the days of Christmas, seeing the old year out and new year in, and a new spring.
