Olafur Eliason’s Rainbow Assembly, made water and light, was put on a halt to its display in February 2017. Just as the iridescent, intangible artwork evaporated, Ra-hee Hong, the director of Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art,  promptly resigned from all of her positions. Even after her husband, Chairman Lee Kun-hee, collapsed due to a heart attack in May 2014, she actively pursued her career, such as initiating projects such as “Beyond and Between,” “Exquisite and Precious: The Splendor of Korean Art,” and “A Homage to Korean Architecture: Wisdom of the Earth,” thwarted by political corruption allegations at Samsung’s  Currently, Currently, Hong only holds some prestigious positions such as the chairwoman of the New York DIA Art Foundation. Due to her absence, Leeum has been providing permanent exhibitions, mystifying the projections of the museum.

Despite the various strains such as the creation of slush funds, Korea’s modern art collecting history and the contributions that Hong and Lee had made are inseparable. Especially, the quantity and quality of the collection encompassing ancient and modern art are unrivaled, not only domestically but in Asia as well. Although the number of super-collectors in Asia has been soaring recently, the 40-year-long trajectory of Samsung's second-generation couple cannot be defeated.

Unlike Lee, who quietly continued his collection while purchasing expensive antiques, Hong Ra-hee's move used to be a role model, greatly affecting the art and business circles. Most business owners followed suit, paying keen attention to Hong's every move. In the international arena, she was not only the “first lady” of Samsung but also the spotlight of attention as an influential museum director. Art News annually enlisted Hong on the '200 Collectors of the World.'

Despite Hong and Lee’s impact on the modern art collecting field, it lacks publicity, which can also be reflected in Samsung’s punctilious corporate culture. In addition, the Korean government’s hostile view on artwork collections, causing the general public to be more unaware of the couple’s impact. However, it is illogical of Lee to be discreet with his public exhibitions. It also runs counter to Lee's self-declaration of the core mission as 'leading culture and communicating with the public.'

However, some insight to the company’s manufacturing system, origin, and ideals that the company is constructed under is documented by the vice director of Ho-Am art museum and under the wing of the Lee’s for 20 years. In his book, Lee Collection, the author recollects the contrasting father-son approach to art. THe father valued discipline, causing his to not indulge in spending significant amounts of money on . This does not, however, undermine the fact that the father collected various national treasures, though he did ruthlessly turn down dealers who would put up exorbitant prices. Additionally, he valued his artwork, as it is stated that when he acquired the Crown of Gaya, he put his undivided attention on it, focusing his everyday activities in protecting the “safety” of this national treasure. Also, he collected sculptures from Bourdelle, Maillol, and Henry Moore, and even invested in Korean sculptors. He annually attended national exhibitions without question, and took an interest in artwork that don’t necessarily have significant name value.

Unlike his father, Lee Kun-hee was dedicated in collecting valuable artwork, for he was devoted in creating a prestigious collection. He conspicuously increased the number of national treasures from 21 to 100, and wherever there was a masterpiece, his staff would be there, and willingly spending gargantuan amounts of money in order to acquire them. Due to the growing influence of the company, Lee was able to obtain various goods, such as Chunghwa Baekja, in foreign auctions. Also during this time, he was able to collect various valuable artifacts from Jeong Seon.

Alongside her husband’s focus on valuing high-branded artwork, Hong also actively pursued artworks from notable in artists and masterpieces. Due to her studies Seoul National University as an Applied Arts major, since her introduction to the family, she was taken under the wings of her father-in-law and was appointed as the director of Hoam Art Museum in 1995.  To figure the direction and the boundaries of the museum, Lee appointed Dr. Kim Hong-nam (Ewha Womans University) and Dr. Song Mi-sook (Sungshin Women's University) as advisors and sought advice. Also, she initiated collaborations with foreign museums under the medium of collections.

Leeum's collection of contemporary Korean art includes leading artists from Korean art history, including Koo Bon-woong, Lee In-sung, Kim Hwan-ki, Park Soo-geun, Lee Joong-sup, Jang Wook-jin, Yoo Young-guk, Seo Se-ok, Park Seo-bo, Lee Woo-hwan, Yoon Hyung-keun, Lee Geon-yong and Park Yi-so. They also included sculptures of Kim Jong-young, Jon Bae, Song Young-soo and Lee Soo-kyung, as well as photos and videos of Kang Hong-koo, Kim A-ta and Kim Soo-ja. The museum also collected works by young artists such as Lee Dong-ki, Kwon Oh-sang, Hwang Sun-ram, Jeong Yeon-doo and Yang Hye-kyu. Alongside the vast display of Korean artists, Leeum presented diverse contemporary western art, from surrealism, abstract expressionism, conceptualism, and pop art.

The main core of the museum is comprised of sketches by Arshile Gorky, informel artist Jean Dubuffet, abstract expressionist Mark Rothko, and Josef Albers’ work from the 1950s and 60s. Hong especially cherishes Mark Rothko’s pieces, in which she paid 2 million dollars a piece for her four piece, consisted of three in his prime and one of his final pieces. Other attractions of the museum include paintings from Willem de Kooning, Joan Mitchell,  abstract pieces from Ad Reinhardt, and Louise Bourgeois’ Maman. Cy Twombly’s project that symbolizes unconsciousness through indecipherable handwriting is not only presented in Leeum, but is also in Hong and Lee’s personal collection. Also, they were able to collect pieces from artists such as Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Matthew Barney, Ed Ruscha, Alexander Calder, Frank Stella, and Jeff Koons.

In European contemporary art, he collected pieces from artists such as Alberto Giacometti, Sigmar Polke, Gerhard Richter, and Damien Hirst. The museum also acquired artwork from Asian artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami, and Zeng Fanzhi. Due to the sundry of modern and contemporary art, it posed questions regarding the justification of a collection, for it didn’t necessarily focus on a central theme, causing critics calling out the lack of unity of the collection.

To this critique, an official stated how this museum focuses on Korean art with the collaboration of other international art projects, and this should be the perspective in which the collection should be viewed. One expert commented, “There is a faint line of similarities that intertwines the pieces in the collection,” whereas another expert qualified their lack of unity in theme by stating how the museum had a late start in comparison to others, but praised the collection as being irreplaceable.

Nevertheless, Hong and Lee’s accomplishment of creating a collection is a significant asset, given that there are no other competitors. It should be in consideration that they should use the assets to inform the public and expand the horizons of art in Korea. Therefore, Leeum should not be run by a singly entity, but rather a system. Every Korean long for the flourishing of the collection, for Leeum is Korea’s face and representation in the international scope.
