<Revised Studies in Drawing> vol. 3,4
<Studies in Drawing> published by the Ministry of Education of the Korean Empire is a compilation of drawings and sketches intended to be copied by art students. Its purpose was to teach pupils to conceive of painting not a mere depiction of what is seen but an outward expression of their internal perceptions of society and culture. The first edition included a sketch of the Korean national flag as a symbol of national sovereignty. However, after the annexation by Japan in 1910, the Japanese Government-General published <Revised Studies in Drawing> substituting the Korean with the Japanese flag.
The book and its story reflect the mechanisms through which visual arts education was employed to influence society and as such is an important stepping stone in the analysis of Modern art textbooks.
