솔올미술관이 개관전으로 준비한 《루치오 폰타나: 공간·기다림》은 폰타나의 공간주의 미술을 집중적으로 조명한다. 이탈리아 현대미술의 거장 루치오 폰타나는 전통적인 예술을 극복하고 기술의 발전을 적극적으로 수용한 새롭고 다차원적인 미술 형식을 제안하는 기념비적 「백색 선언」을 1946년 발표했다. 이듬해인 1947년 폰타나는 「공간주의–제1차 공간주의 선언」을 발표하면서 자신의 예술적 지향점을 더욱 견고히 드러냈다.
작가는 형태와 색, 소리의 조형성을 공간에 담아내고, 감상자의 움직임을 더해 작품을 4차원으로 확장하는 시도를 했다. 그 결과 1947년 빛을 이용해 공간개념으로 작품을 확장시킨 〈공간 환경〉 연작이 탄생했다. 또한 폰타나는 전통 회화가 지닌 평면성의 한계를 극복하기 위해 캔버스에 구멍을 내거나 칼자국을 낸 〈뚫기〉(Buchi)와 〈베기〉(Tagli) 연작을 통해 자신의 〈공간 개념〉을 발전시켰다. 이번 전시에서는 1940년대부터 60년대까지 소개되었던 공간 주제 작품 원형을 그대로 재현한 〈공간 환경〉 여섯 작품을 선보인다.
Sorol Art Museum’s inaugural exhibition, 《Lucio FONTANA:Spatial Concept》, focuses on FONTANA’s Spatialist art. Lucio Fontana, proposed a new and multi-dimensional art form that overcame traditional art and actively embraced technological advancements when he announced the “White Manifesto” in 1946. In 1947, Fontana further solidified his artistic direction by presenting the <Spatialists>.
The artist attempted to encapsulate form, color, and the sculptural aspects of sound in space, seeking to extend the artwork into the fourth dimension by incorporating the viewer’s movements. As a result, <Spatial Environments> series was created in 1949, expanding the concept of space using light. FONTANA, aiming to overcome the limitations of the flatness inherent in traditional painting, advanced his <Spatial Concept> by creating holes in the canvas with the <Holes>(Buchi) series, and slashing the canvas with a cutter in the <Slashes>(Tagli) series, drawing the physical space of reality into the aesthetic realm of his works. In this exhibition, six <Spatial Environments> are installed, for which the original settings of each artwork from the 1940s to the 1960s have been faithfully reproduced.
