베르나르 뷔페는 19세에 첫 개인전을 개최하고, 20세에 프랑스 최고 권위의 비평가상을 수상하였다. 27세에 매거진 콘느상스 데 아츠(Connaissance des arts)가 전후 최고의 예술가로 선정하고, 30세에 뉴욕 타임스가 ‘뛰어난 재능을 지닌 프랑스의 젊은 예술가 5인’ 중 한 명으로 선정하는 등 베르나르 뷔페는 어린 시절부터 천재적인 재능을 인정받으며 비평가들에게는 찬사를, 대중들에게는 사랑을 받으며 명성을 높였다.
경력 초기에 나타나는 일상의 사물과 사람, 실존적 고민을 보여주는 광대, 세계 도시의 풍경, 뷔페의 확장된 세계관을 보여주는 문학/신화/종교, 사랑하는 아내이자 평생의 뮤즈인 아나벨, 그가 남긴 마지막 주제인 죽음까지, 개인적이고 사적인 것에서부터 대중적이거나 지적인 주제까지 여러 가지 광범위한 주제를 자유로이 넘나들며, 회화, 드로잉, 판화 등 다양한 매체를 통해 뷔페만의 미학을 탄생시켰고, 이번 전시를 통해 그 물리적 존재감을 확인해 볼 수 있을 것이다.
Bernard BUFFET had his first solo exhibition at the age of 19 and won France’s most prestigious critic’s prize at the age of 20. At 27, the magazine Connaissance des arts named him the best artist of the post-war period, and at 30, the New York Times named him one of France’s five fabulous young people. From an early age, BUFFET was recognized as a prodigy, acclaimed by critics and beloved by the public.
From the everyday objects and people that appeared early in his career, to the clowns that reflected his existential concerns, to the landscapes of the world’s cities, to literature/ mythology/religion that revealed BUFFET's expanded worldview, to his beloved wife and lifelong muse, Annabel, to his final subject, death... he freely traversed a wide range of subjects, from personal and private to popular or intellectual. Through various mediums such as painting, drawing, and printmaking, BUFFET created his own aesthetics, and this exhibition provides an opportunity to confirm the physical presence.
