‘이신자, 실로 그리다’는 이신자(1930- )의 예술 세계 전반을 재조명하고자 마련되었다. 작가는 1970년대 섬유예술이라는 어휘조차 없던 시절에 ‘태피스트리’를 국내에 소개하는 효시적 역할을 하며, 한국섬유예술의 영역을 구축하고 확장한 주역이다. 이번 회고전에서는 초기작부터 2000년대 작품 90여 점과 드로잉, 사진 등의 아카이브 30여 점을 통해 이신자의 생애와 다채로운 작업 전반을 새롭게 읽어보고자 한다.

이신자는 다양한 섬유 매체를 발굴하고 독자적인 표현 기법을 적용한 작품 활동으로 한국 섬유예술계의 이정표를 세웠다. 전시는 이신자의 작품세계가 형성되는 과정을 4부로 나누어, 각 시기별 한국 섬유미술사의 변천사와 작가의 작품세계의 변모상을 함께 살펴볼 수 있도록 구성했다. 특히 작품의 뒷면까지 볼 수 있는 입체적인 전시 연출을 통해 작품을 제작하는 일련의 과정을 연상할 수 있는 동시에, 견고한 밀도와 디테일로 작품을 완성한 이신자의 공예가로서의 면모도 확인할 수 있다.

‘LEE ShinJa: Threadscapes’ was organized to shed new light on LEE’s (b. 1930) body of work. Introducing tapestry to the Korean art scene in the 1970s when the term “fiber art” had yet to be established, LEE played a pioneering role in the shaping and growth of Korean fiber art. This retrospective reinterprets LEE’s artistic life and colorful oeuvre through some 90 works, produced between her early years and the 2000s, along with 30 pieces of archival materials including drawings and photographs.

LEE has set milestones in the Korean fiber art scene, rediscovering diverse textile media and working with authentic expressive techniques. This exhibition divides the formative process of LEE’s artistic identity into four parts, examining by period the history of Korean fiber art in light of the evolution of LEE’s works. Showcasing the works three-dimensionally, from the front and back, this exhibition offers a glimpse into the works’ production processes while highlighting the artist’s substantiality- and detail-oriented craftsmanship.
