Taking “Olympic Effect” as the keyword, Olympic Effect: Korean Architecture and Design from 1980s to 1990s, revisits the multi-layered architectural events and design objects that have been made marking the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games. Rather than focusing on the Olympics event itself, the exhibition aims to unfold the multiple layers of meanings that are entailed in the rapidly changing landscape that have been sparked by the 1988 Seoul Olympics–urban development, environmental design, architecture, objects and images. The archives displayed across the exhibition halls become a medium for audiences to navigate through the process of how and by whom the visual and material cultures as well as man-made artifacts of the times have been manufactured and accepted.
The exhibition consists of four sections: “The Olympic Effect,” “Designers, Organizations, and Processes,” “Perspectives and Facades,” and “Tools and Technology.”The traces of urban changes based on the comprehensively planned design process and material foundation during the early 80s while leading up to the 1988 Seoul Olympics are re-examined through diverse mediums including drawing, blueprint, sketch, video and photographs, and such archival materials are also reinterpreted and expressed in newly commissioned artworks.
