올해는 한국전쟁 발발 70주년이 되는 해로, 1953년 휴전협정 이후 대한민국은 현재 세계 유일의 분단국가로 남아있다. 이번 전시는 한국전쟁으로 인한 피해와 상처를 극복하고, 전쟁을 비롯 코로나19 등 전지구적 재난 속에서 미술을 통한 치유와 평화의 비전을 제시하고자 마련된 대규모 기획전이다.
한국전쟁은 시간이 지날수록 전쟁과 분단, 통일에 대한 세대 간 인식 차이가 커지며 점차 ‘낯선 전쟁’이 되어가고 있다. 지금도 세계 곳곳에서 크고 작은 전쟁이 일어나지만 미디어를 통한 간접적 전달에 그칠 뿐 실감하기는 어렵다. ‘낯선 전쟁’전은 국가 간 대립, 이념의 상충과 같이 전쟁을 설명하는 거시적 관점의 이면에서 전쟁 한가운데를 살아가고 있는 사람들의 이야기를 다룬다. 전쟁이 개인에게 남긴 비극과 상처를 조명하고 세계 시민으로서 연대를 위한 책임과 역할을 말하고자 한다. 이를 통해 인간성의 회복과 전쟁 없는 세계를 향해 공동체와 국가가 나아가야 할 방향을 모색한다.
Korea remains the only divided nation in the world, 70 years after the outbreak of the Korean War and ever since the armistice agreement of 1953. The exhibition ‘unflattening’ is a largescale exhibition which attempts to rise above the wounds and scars left by the Korean War while putting forward art as an antidote and a vision for peace amidst the global crisis marked by COVID-19 and international hostility.
The Korean War us gradually becoming “defamiliarized” in the minds of the public, with growing gaps between each generation’s perception of the war, national division, and reunification. Even today, there are many wars of various sizes taking place around the world, but it is difficult to grasp the reality of war when news is received indirectly through the media. ‘Unflattening’ deals with people living right in the center of a war -or on the other side of the macroscopic view that reduces wars down to international or ideological conflicts- to shed light on the tragic impacts of war and to discuss our roles and responsibilities for solidarity as global citizens. In doing so, the exhibition seeks ways for communities and nations to rehabilitate humanity and banish armed conflict from the face of the earth.
