대구미술관에서는 2013년부터 역량 있는 젊은 작가(Y)와 중견작가(Y+)를 지원하는 ‘Y,Y+아티스트 프로젝트’를 진행해왔다. 이 전시는 그동안 선정된 작가들을 재조명하고 그들의 이야기에 동참하기 위해서 기획되었다.
전시제목 ‘당신 속의 마법’은 1599년경에 쓰인 셰익스피어의 『헨리 5세』의 마지막 대사이다. 공주 캐서린에게 결혼을 요구하는 달콤한 사랑 고백의 대사이지만 단순한 사랑 고백을 넘어 난국의 정치적 상황을 종식시키고 새로운 시작을 알리는 의미심장한 메타포이다. 예술의 정의는 ‘메타포’(은유)에 있으며 작가들의 조형 언어는 직접적이기보다는 은유적이고, 예술의 본질은 은유를 통한 의미의 변용에 있다. 예술작품의 표현적 속성은 은유적 의미이다. 우리는 그래서 작가의 표현
성과 개성을 느낄 뿐이다. 마치 암호를 해독하듯 미로처럼 구성된 전시장을 거닐다 보면 작가들의 마법에 빠질 것이다. 무엇을 은유하는가. 어떻게 은유하는가. 12명 작가의 활약상은 30-40대 작가가 직면하고 있는 현실과 더 나아가 우리 사회가 마주한 현실의 여러 풍경을 깊이 있게 보여줄 것이다.
Since 2013, Daegu Art Museum has been carrying out a project supporting competent artists. The present exhibition was designed to shed new light on these selected artists and encourage our participation in their stories.
The exhibition title ‘You have witchcraft in your lips’ is the last line from 『Henry V』 of SHAKESPEARE written near 1599. This is a line of Henry V’s sweet love confession asking Princess Catherine to marry him, but this is a significant metaphor ending many political conflicts and heralding a new start. Art can be defined as “a metaphor” and the figurative language of artists is implicative rather metaphorical than direct and the essence of art consists in transformation of meaning through metaphors. The expressive attributes of art works lie in the metaphorical significance.
In other words, all we can do is to feel expressiveness and individuality of each artist.
If you walk around the exhibition hall looking like a maze as if you were deciphering the code, you will soon fall under a spell. The vivid performances of 12 artists will demonstrate with insight not only the reality the artists in their 30s-40s are facing but also diverse landscapes of the reality our society is facing.
