영암군립하정웅미술관에서는 ‘전화황_기도의 미술’전을 개최하여 하정웅컬렉션의 시작인 재일화가 전화황의 삶과 예술 세계를 조명한다. 전화황(1909-96)은 평안남도 안주에서 태어나 평양 숭인학교 재학시 조선미술전람회에 입선하는 등 두각을 나타내었으나, 무소유의 생활을 모토로 하는 종교에 귀의하였다. 그러다가 교토(京都) 서양화단의 대표화가 스다 구니타로(須田國太郞, 1891-1961)에게 그림을 배우면서 화가의 길로 들어섰다. 이후 교토미술전과 행동미술전에서 상을 받으면서 꾸준히 작품 활동을 하였다. 1982년에는 하정웅 기획으로 화업 50주년을 기념하는 전시가 한국과 일본에서(도쿄, 교토, 서울, 대구, 광주) 순회전 형식으로 열려 재일화가의 작품세계를 알리는 계기가 되었다.
이번 전시에서 선보이는 전화황의 (관음)불상과 태양의 꽃 시리즈는 일제강점기부터 해방, 한국전쟁과 민족 분단을 겪은 작가의 삶이 투영되어있다. 이 전시를 통해 우리의 슬픈 역사에 희생된 재일 한국인의 삶을 애도하고 위령하는 시간이 되었으면 하는 바람이다.
The Yeongam Ha Jungwoong Museum of Art is examining the life and artistic world of the Japan-based Korean artist CHUN Hwahwang by holding the exhibition ‘CHUN Hwa-hwang_Art of Prayers.’ CHUN Hwa-hwang(1909-96) was born in Anju of Pyeongannam-do Province and demonstrated outstanding talent, having his work chosen to be exhibited at the Joseon Art Exhibition when he was enrolled at the Sungin School in Pyonyang, but joined a
religion with nonpossession as its motto. He continuously made art, and won awards in the Kyoto Art Exhibition and the Action Art Exhibition. In 1982, HA Jungwoong organized an exhibition celebrating fifty years of CHUN’s artistic achievement, and the exhibition toured Korea and Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto, Seoul, Daegu and Gwangju), serving as an opportunity for Japan-based Korean artists’ art to become better known.
The artist’s life of having experienced Japan’s occupation of Korea, liberation, the Korean War and the division of the Korean peninsula are reflected in his (Goddess of Mercy) buddhist statue and Flower of the Sun series, which are presented in the current exhibition. I hope for this exhibition to be a time of grieving for the sacrifices of Koreans in our sad history, and for consoling souls.
