OCI미술관은 2017년을 마무리하는 전시로 오원배 동국대 교수 초대 개인전을 개최한다. 인간 실존과 소외 문제에 천착해온 작가는 이번 전시에서 고도의 과학·기술 발전을 마주한 오늘날 진정한 휴머니티란 무엇인지 질문을 던진다. 기능적 효율을 극대화하는 현대 사회가 어떻게 인간을 도구화하고 집단 명령의 체계를 형성해 가는지, 과학과 기계 문명의 발달이 어디로 치닫게 되는지, 이 사회에서 여전히 희망을 찾을 수 있는지, 인공지능의 기능이 인간의 감성적인 영역까지 침투하는 현시점에 대한 날카로운 성찰이다. 폭 32m의 대작, 거친 현장 페인팅 등 압도적인 크기의 신작, 다양한 소재의 드로잉 등 출품작은 모두 최근 1-2년 사이 제작한 신작으로, 40여 년의 화업 기간 동안 한결같은 작가의 창작열을 가늠케 한다. 더불어 전시장의 1, 2, 3층마다 또렷이 구분되는 전시 구성은 저마다 다른 회화 기법과 스타일을 보여주며 삼계(三界; 욕계, 색계, 무색계)를 은유한다. 긍정이나 부정의 섣부른 판단을 유보하는 오원배는 담담하면서도 단호한 어조로, ‘지금, 여기’ 인간의 의미에 대해 묻는다.

OCI Museum of Art invites Professor OH Won-bae of Dongguk University to its venue where it will be presenting his solo show. Occupying himself with inquiring into issues pertaining to human existence and alienation, Oh raises questions concerning the identity of humanity in the present day amidst highly advanced science and technology. He displays keen insight into the present point of time when artificial intelligence penetrates the arena of human emotion, posing questions such as how contemporary society can instrumentalize humans and create a system of collective order, the direction in which modern science and mechanical civilization will advance, and how we can still find hope in our society. On display at the exhibition are all of the new works including a work with an overwhelming size of 32 meters, rough paintings done on the spot, and drawings dealing with a variety of subject matter. These works seem to intimate his creative impulse which has remained constant over the 40 years of his painting practice. The exhibition consists of three distinct sections on the first, second, and third floor. The works on show in these sections are metaphors for the Three Realms (the Desire Realm, the Form Realm, and the Formless Realm). OH inquires into the meaning of human in ‘here and now’.
