국립현대미술관은 최근 수집된 작품을 보여주는 ‘신소장품전’을 개최하여 미술관의 소장품을 대중에게 알리고 시대별 특징과 미술사적 의미 등에 관한 조사연구 및 평가의 기회를 마련하고 있다. 본 전시는 4년간(2013-16) 수집한 작품 932점 중 121점을 선정하여 구성하였다. ‘삼라만상(森羅萬象)’은 강익중의 작품명에서 차용한 것으로 현대미술의 다양함과 작가들의 무한한 표현영역을 의미한다. 신소장품전은 주제를 정하고 작품을 선정하는 다른 기획전시와는 차별성을 가진다. 수집된 작품을 통해 동시대의 미감과 작품 속에 반영된 역사적 의미와 주제를 역으로 찾아내는 것이다. 4년 동안 수집한 작품들은 하나의 큰 주제보다 작가의 자유롭고 개성적인 표현영역과 주제들의 공존 현상을 보인다. 본 전시는 1전시실의 김종태, 김환기 등 근대기에서부터 미술사적인 흐름 속의 작품과 나머지 4개 전시실에 다양한 소주제로 구성된 동시대 미술로 크게 두 부분으로 나누어 감상할 수 있다.

The National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea has been holding the New Acquisitions, to showcase the museum collection, providing the opportunity to study the characteristics of the artwork by era, and to ponder upon the historical significance. This exhibition is a display of 121 items out of 932 that have been collected from 2013 to 2016. The title, Samramansang which is interpreted as, “All things and phenomena of the universe.” It is borrowed from the title of the artwork by KANG Ik-joong which is also included in the show, signifying that the exhibition is one that embraces the diversity of contemporary art, and the artists’ infinite scope of expression.

Normally, when planning exhibitions, the theme is decided upon, after which the artworks are selected accordingly. However, it was different for the New Acquisitions. The historical significance that is reflected in the contemporary aesthetics of the new collection can be traced in reverse. One can witness the coexistence of the various themes and original and footloose expressions rather than one major theme. Gallery 1 features the tradition moving through the modern era in a chronological fashion, and the 4 other galleries house Contemporary Art according to different sub-themes.
