SeMA Gold <X: 1990년대 한국미술>전은 1987년부터 1996년에 이르는 10년간을 대표하는 전시와 신세대 소그룹 활동, 그리고 당대의 주요 작가들의 작품을 통해 그 시대와 미술이 갖는 의미를 재조명했다. 90년대 젊은 미술가들은 기성의 미술을 넘어서기 위해 집단화된 움직임을 거부하고 설치와 사진, 비디오 등의 새로운 매체들을 적극적으로 활용하거나, 작가의 개성이 강조된 새로운 미술의 영역을 찾아내고자 애썼고, 그 결과 본격적으로 포스트모더니즘과 다원주의의 흐름이 이들의 활동과 함께 한국 미술의 화두로 등장했다고 해도 과언이 아니다. 이들은 ‘X세대’이면서 신세대 미술가들 로 불리었고, 이들은 대중소비사회의 스펙터클과 일상성, 대중문화의 다양한 아이콘들을 작품에 적극적으로 차용했다. 특히 한국의 경우 1980년대 중반 3저 호황으로 인한 경제적 풍요와 컬러TV를 비롯한 카메라, 캠코더, 워크맨 등의 전자기기의 보급화로 인한 대중소비문화의 정착과 더불어 시대적 취향이 심미적 감수성으로 연결되었던 당시의 정치 사회 문화적 맥락 속에서 재연함으로써 한국 현대미술의 동시대성의 씨앗을 확인할 수 있는 기회가 될 것이다. 나아가 미술, 문학, 대중문화, 언더그라운드(하위문화) 등 당시의 다양한 문화적 코드들을 연결하여 제시함으로써 관람객들에게 1990년대라는 시대를 해석하는 자신만의 관점을 찾아낼 수 있는 기회를 제공한다.

SeMA Gold, X: Korean Art in the Nineties is intended to cast a new light on the full import of the 1990s and its art through art shows, small group activities, and artworks by key artists of the time. The period of the 1990s that this exhibition deals with refers to the period of 10 years ranging from 1987 to 1996. Young artists of the 1990s refused to join any collective movements, moving beyond established art genres. They did their utmost to discover a new territory of art where their distinctive idioms were underscored through their aggressive use of new mediums such as installation, photography, and video. As a result, postmodernism and pluralism stimulated by their activities emerged as the primary topics of Korean art at that time. These artists, included in part of Generation X and often referred to as new generation artists, positively appropriated spectacles and dailiness in mass consumer society and multifarious icons of popular culture. This exhibition will serve as an opportunity to clarify the contemporary characteristics of Korean art through a representation of aesthetic sensibilities and preferences that were influenced by mass consumer culture in the political, social, and cultural contexts of the time.
