2016년 국립현대미술관 덕수궁관에서 열린 한국 근대미술 거장 시리즈 중 마지막 작가로, 유영국(1916-2002)을 재조명하는 대규모 회고전이다. 유영국은 1916년 경상북도 울진의 깊은 산골에서 태어나 1930년대 세계에서 가장 모던한 도시 중 하나였던 도쿄에서 미술공부를 시작했다. 1943년 태평양전쟁의 포화 속에서 귀국, 해방과 한국전쟁을 거치며 어부로, 양조장 주인으로 생활하기도 했다. 그러나 1955년 서울에서 본격적인 미술활동을 재개, 모던아트협회, 현대작가초대전, 신상회 등 한국의 가장 전위적인 미술단체를 이끌며 ‘한국 추상미술의 선구자’로 평가받았다. 그 후 1964년 돌 연 미술그룹 활동의 종언을 선언하고 첫 개인전을 개최했으며, 이후 2002년 타계할 때까지 오로지 개인 작업실에서 작품을 제작하는 일에만 몰두, 평생 400여 점의 아름다운 유화작품을 남겼다. 그의 탄생 100주년을 맞아 기획된 이번 전시에는 유영국의 절정기인 1960년대 작품 30여 점을 포함하여, 총 100여 점의 엄선된 작품과 60여 점의 아카이브를 망라하였다. 20세기 한국의 대혼란기 속에서도 묵묵히 추상미술의 새 장을 열었던 유영국의 대표작을 실견할 수 있는 기회이다. 

It’s a big-scale retrospective exhibition of Korean modern master, YOO Young-kuk(1916-2002). YOO was born in Uljin, North Gyeongsang Province, and studied art in Tokyo, one of the world’s most modern cities at that time. He returned to Korea in 1943, amidst the tumult of the Pacific War. Through the ensuing years of Korea’s independence(1945) and the Korean War(1950-53), he sustained himself by working as a fisherman or by brewing and selling his own liquor. After 1955, he fully resumed his art activities, becoming a leader of many early avant-garde art groups in Korea (e.g., Modern Art Association, Contemporary Artists Exhibition, and Sinsang-hoe(meaning ‘New Form Group’)) and establishing himself as one of the true pioneers of Korean contemporary art. In 1964, however, he announced the end of his association with art groups and held his first solo exhibition. From then until his death in 2002, he was devoted solely to working alone in his studio, day in and day out, such that he left about 400 magnificent oil paintings. This exhibition was organized to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of YOO Young-kuk. It shows a. 100 selected works and a. 60 pieces of archives of the artist, including 30 masterpieces produced in 1960s, which is the climax period of the artist’s career.
