미술관 개관전인 ‘존재의 흔적들’전은 ‘물방울의 작가’로 잘 알려진 한국의 대표적인 현대미술 작가인 김창열 화백의 작품을 시기 별로 나누어 소개하며, 대부분 작가가 기증한 작품들이 전시된다. 그의 작품세계는 초기 앵포르멜 시기부터 액상의 형태가 흘러내리는 과도기를 거쳐 70년대 초에 이르러 드디어 화면 위에 물방울 이 맺힌 극사실적 화면을 보여주었다. 이 물방울은 작가의 삶을 통해 조우했던 수많은 사람과 사건들의 기억을 담고 있으며, 한국의 비극적 근현대사 속에서 제기되었던 존재에 대한 실존적 질문과 사유들을 함축하고 있다. 작가는 물방울이라는 대상을 영롱하고 아름다운 것으로, 또 때로는 그것이 이내 사라져버린 흔적을 그렸다. 화면은 대체로 아교만을 바른 마직물을 그대로 사용하였으며, 한자와 천자문을 겹쳐 쓴 배경 위에 물방울을 그리기도 하였다. 물방울은 말 그대로 존재이자 그것의 연약하고 덧없는 상태를 보여주는 대상으로서 문화적, 정신적, 역사적 정황들에 대한 작가의 깊은 철학적 사색의 결정체인 것이다.

The inaugural exhibition, titled ‘Traces of Existence’, aims to present the works of KIM Tschang-yeul, a master of contemporary Korean art best known as a ‘water drop painter’, to be displayed across a total of three exhibition rooms which are divided into three periods. Most of the artwork on display are those donated by the artist himself. KIM’s artistry began in the early days of Art Informel in Korea, passing through a transition period of fluid shapes trickling down on the canvas, while his ultrarealistic depictions of water droplets on the canvas developed in the early 1970s. KIM’s water drops embody the memories of a myriad of people and events he has encountered throughout his life, and carry the existential questions and thoughts on being, which had been raised throughout the tragic history of modern Korea. The artist depicts such water drops as crystalline and beautiful things, and occasionally also portrays the traces of the vanished water drops. KIM generally uses hemp cloth coated with only glue to serve as the canvas, while in his other series, he paints water drops on prepared backgrounds consisting of printed Chinese characters or the Thousand-Character Classic layered. The water drops represent existence itself as well as their fragility and futility, while also demonstrating the artist’s profound philosophical thoughts on various cultural, spiritual, and historical circumstances.
