2016년 4월, 송은아트스페이스는 연례 국가 프로젝트의 네 번째 초청국가로 인도네시아를 선정하고 ‘Indonesia in SongEun, MES 56  Keren dan Beken : 인도네시아 젊은 작가전’이라는 제목으로 예술사진의 실험적 제작 및 보급을 위해 2002년 인도네시아 족자 카르타에서 예술가들에 의해 설립된 비영리 조직인 ‘MES 56’ 작가들의 그룹전을 국내 처음으로 선보인다. 이번 전시에는 MES 56의 작가 중 총 14인이 참여하며 rOH Projects의 설립자이자 디렉터인 락사마나 띠르따지의 협력으로 진행된다. 

이번 전시는 전시 전반을 아우르는 단어이자 MES 56의 작업 태도를 상징하는‘Keren dan Beken’, 영어로는 Cool and Famous로 의역되는 이 표어를 중심으로, 사진 기반의 다양한 매체를 다루는 젊은 인도네시아 작가 그룹이 자국의 정치, 사회, 종교, 문화 전반에 대해 어떻게 조명하는지 살펴본다.

From April 2016, SongEun ArtSpace proudly presents its fourth special annual country based project titled ‘Indonesia in SongEun : MES 56 – Keren dan Beken’ translating to ‘Cool and Famous’. MES 56 is a non-profit, artist run institution which was established in Jogjakarta in 2002 by a group of artists of photobased art who kiddingly aspire to be ‘cool and famous’.

Collaborated with guest curator Laksamana TIRTADJI, the founder and director of ROH Projects, this exhibition will present the works of fourteen artists of MES 56, showing as a group for the first time in Korea. This exhibition is a good insight on how these contemporary Indonesian artists analyze, reflect and view their politics, society, religion and culture through various media based on photographic art practices.
