서울미술관은 이중섭 탄생 100주년을 기념하여 ‘이중섭은 죽었다’전을 개최했다. 한국인이 가장 사랑하는 화가 이중섭은 <황소>, <소와 어린이>, <길 떠나는 가족> 등 수많은 걸작을 남긴 대한민국 대표 화가이다. 소박하지만 따뜻한 마음이 드러나는 그림들과 강렬하고 정열적인 붓터치가 강조된 <황소> 연작들은 한국 전쟁이라는 큰 아픔을 가지고 있는 한국인의 마음을 크게 움직였다. 하지만 천재성과 광기에 관한 이야기가 부풀려지고 왜곡돼 가며 그의 신화는 점점 커져만 가고, 그로 인해 정작 그의 그림은 지나치게 ‘과대평가’되어 있다는 구설에 오르기도 한다.

  이 전시는 신화가 되어버린 이중섭의 일생에서 거품을 걷어내어 본인의 가족을 너무나 아끼고 한 여자를 지극하게 사랑했던 자연인 이중섭의 인생을 따라가보려 한다. 망우리 공동묘지에 쓸쓸하게 자리 잡은 그의 묘지에서 출발하여 그가 가장 열심히 창작에 몰두했던 통영 시절, 그리고 쓸쓸하게 개인전을 준비했던 서울 마포구 신수동 시절 등 그가 자리했던 공간특성을 기반으로 그의 인생길을 되짚어 가며 자연인 이중섭의 발자취를 재현한다. 그 길의 끝에서 우리는 ‘신화가 된 민족화가’ 이중섭이 아닌 진짜 ‘이중섭’의 예술 세계를 발견하게 될 것이다.

  An exhibition on famed painter LEE Jung-seob has opened at Seoul Museum. Titled ‘LEE Jung-seob Died’, the exhibition sheds light on the artist LEE Jung-seob’s life as a man who was separated from his family during the Korean War. It features his masterpieces, including renowned paining <Yellow ox>, which was priced at 3.8 billion won as the most expensive painting recorded in history of Korean art auction in 2010. LEE’s works were ignored and unappreciated during his lifetime. Living in poverty, hopelessness, and loneliness during the war and being apart from his family due to deterioration in health and financial problems, he often fell ill physically and mentally.

  LEE is best known for his series of Korean bulls, its strength and energy depicted with bold brushstrokes. This was in sharp contrast to the fragility of his life. He is now the most beloved artist and well-known one in Korea. ‘LEE Jung-seob Died’ marks the centennial birthday of the artist LEE Jung-seob(1916-56), who left unique footprints in Korean modern art by incorporating his remarkable life history with passion of art.
