러시아 연해주에서 태어나 상트페테르부르크(구 레닌그라드)에서 미술교육을 받고 그곳에서 화가이자 교육자로 일생을 보낸 변월룡의 국내 첫 회고전이다. 고려인 출신인 그의 삶과 예술은 식민, 분단, 전쟁, 이념대립 등 한국근현대사뿐만 아니라 세계 1, 2차 대전 및 공산주의 혁명, 전체주의, 냉전, 개혁과 개방을 겪은 러시아 근현대사를 관통한다. 변월룡은 역사의 증인이자 경계에 선 자로서 세상과 자기 내면을 향한 시선을 화폭에 담았다.

  유화, 드로잉, 판화, 포스터 등 200여 점의 작품과 편지, 사진, 잡지, 카탈로그 등 관련자료 70여 점이 출품되어 작가의 삶과 예술을 입체적으로 조망하는 이번 전시가 작가의 예술은 물론 한국근현대미술에 내포된 다층의 컨텍스트를 발견하고 또 새로이 생성하는 장(場)이 될 수 있을 것이다. 무엇보다 북한미술이 토대를 구축하는 데 귀한 자양분이 되었던 그의 존재는, 통일을 실현해야 하는 현세대에 역사적 상상력과 책임감을 동시에 불러일으킬 것이다.

  ‘PEN Varlen’ is the first retrospective of the artist PEN Varlen taking place in Korea. Born in Primorsky Krai Russia, PEN studied art in Saint Petersburg(former Leningrad) and spent most of his life there as an artist and an educator. The life and art of this Goryeoin(ethnic Koreans in Russia abd Central Asia) artist penetrate not only the modern and contemporary history of Korea such as colonialization, division of the nation, war, and ideological conflicts, but also that of Russia, the country which experienced the two World Wars, the communist revolution, totalitarianism, the cold war, glasnost and perestroika. He embodied his view towards the world and his inner self on canvas as a witness to history and a ‘border rider.’

  ‘PEN Varlen’ with about 200 works of paintings, drawings, prints and posters, and archives allows the audience to newly encounter PEN Varlen’s art, as well as attempting to extend the discourse in Korean modern art history by displaying multiple aspects of the artist’s life and art. Above all, his significance in establishing the foundation of North Korean art would awaken the historical imagination and responsibility of the current generation who succeeds the duty to realize the unification of Korea.
