The Feast of Time and Space

It is undoubtedly true that we now live in the era of hypercomplex and elaborate data technology beyond the digital age. Being sometimes perplexed by its overwhelming metrics, perhaps are we making the ubiquitous of data in our everyday life or our everyday life in the ubiquitous of data? In this so called cold, “new dark age” that even our behaviours, favourites and ways of thinking are read and analysed from data, a duo exhibition entitled The Feast of Time and Space presents a 3D animation by Je Baak, a new media artist from Seoul and drawings by Fred Sandback, a sculptor from New York offers a subjectively contemplative space for the open ended, liberating human mind in a virtual reality in the realm of data. The exhibition also leads us into another invisible three-dimensional world beyond what we see in our reality through the two-dimensional works of art. An indefinable illusion gives insight into how we perceive our liberating mind and world alongside the contemplative discourse in the virtual shown in the exhibition. Furthermore it discovers unexpected combination and communication through the agency of poetic feeling and illusionistic sense in perception in terms of visual and conceptual aspects from the work of 3D animation and the drawings.

We hope this timely exhibition will warmly welcome as many people as possible so that we can share a myriad of thoughts and feelings liberally about the profound and ambivalent nature of The Feast of Time and Space. It will evoke an analog experience intertwined with digital technology and the power of imagination stirring our unique emotions.

Note
The idea of the ‘feast’ for the exhibition title is more focused on association with the cultural and philosophical side of the friendly speech contest in the course of a lively drinking party depicted in a text entitled The Symposium by Plato.

Je Baak

B. 1978
Live and work in Seoul and London

Upon graduating from BA in Visual Communication at Seoul National University, Seoul and MA in Communication Art and Design at the Royal College of Art, London, Je Baak works with diverse range of artistic practices across photography, installation, film, 3D animation and performance. He seeks for contemplative humanism and poetic fondness underlying critical perspective towards the digital hegemony in the contemporary era. He then implements symbolic metaphors as figurative language reconfigured from the critical pursuit, which are eventually encountered in a virtual reality. A Journey (2015) presented in the exhibition, which is inspired by a hyper realistic RPG (role-playing game) mechanism, blurs boundary between the reality and the RPG. With eliminating the fundamental purpose for the function of the role-playing for game missions, the raison d'êre of the work becomes an alternative experience of a meditative journey into a whole new world governed by enigmatic symbols and surroundings—it constitutes reflection of the artist own desire to seek questions and contemplations derived from living life.

Baak has participated in several major exhibitions nationally and internationally including SeMA Biennale Mediacity Seoul at Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA), 2016, New Visions New Voices at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), 2013 and Korean Eye 2012 at Saatchi Gallery in London, 2012. Baak has received several prominent recognitions. He was awarded the Grand Prize of Joongang Fine Arts Prize in 2010. He won the Grand Prix of VH Award in 2016, the Hyundai Motor Group’s Media Artist Cultivation Project.

Fred Sandback

B. 1943, Bronxville, New York
D. 2003, New York

Fred Sandback majored in philosophy at Yale University as an undergraduate and he studied sculpture at Yale School of Art and Architecture as a graduate. The artist worked with singular, linear structure by employing a simple material such as coloured acrylic yarn, elastic cord and metal wire. He most often stretched them taut from wall to wall and floor to ceiling. Manipulating the neutral property of the materials, ‘lines’ are featured either as two-dimensional or three-dimensional geometric forms within space. The artist paradoxically reflected his own value of the practice by noting “fact and illusion are equivalents” yet through sculptural quality of his work. As if he drew a line into the space, he produced the absolute linear mediums as space-filling volumetric forms, and their nearly intangible quality as the tangible quality through experiencing perceptual illusions while addressing their physical surroundings using the most minimal of means.

A series of his drawings featured in the exhibition, which is seen in seemingly more architectural drawings, explores the distinctive three-dimensional sense in the two-dimensional work on paper. A few lines operate less as contours of a shape and more as unfinished ones themselves. However it allows viewers for an exploration of the numerous possibilities of the lines as a formal element that could be in a kind of impossible space emerged—if only the ethereal and fleeting being of the lines performs the illusory play. Sandback's work is on permanent display at Dia:Beacon, New York and has been invited continuously for exhibitions at many art institutions and galleries around the world.
