낙원의 이편 – This Side of Paradise

이번 기획전은 안양시와 자매결연을 맺고 있는 해외도시 간의 첫 문화예술교류전이다. 안양시는 모두 6개국 7개 도시와 자매도시 결연을 맺고 있다. 미국의 햄튼시, 가든 그로브시, 일본의 도코로자와시, 중국의 웨이팡시, 러시아의 울란우데시, 브라질의 소로까바시, 멕시코의 나우깔빤시와 1989년부터 연차적으로 자매결연을 맺어왔다. 지난해 기획되어 시작된 이 전시를 위해 기획방향, 작가조사, 추진예산 등을 종합적으로 검토한 결과 일본 도코로자와시와 첫 교류전을 갖게 되었다. 이번 교류전의 중심축은 현대미술에 관한 주제를 담보한 기획전으로서 한국미술을 대표하는 작가들과 일본작가들을 한자리에 결집시키면서 어떤 예술적 파장을 이끌어 낼 것인가에 있다. 따라서 본 전시의 형식으로 안양이라는 역사적 맥락을 바탕에 두고 현대미술의 조형언어로 재해석하는 한국작가들의 주제전과 일본작가들의 작품을 하나의 특별전 형식으로 묶는 이중적 구조로 설계했다.

인간의 사유 속에서 낙원은 다음과 같은 세 가지 영토성을 지닌다고 보았다. 실체로서의 원형성인 낙원의 존재성을 전제한다면, 그 가시적인 낙원을 중심으로 낙원의 이편(this side)과 저편(the other side)으로 구획될 수 있다는 것이다. 낙원의 이편이란 낙원을 동경하고 꿈꾸지만, 결코 도달하지 못한 중도(中途)의 세계이다. 이번 전시는 바로 이러한 분별의 이정표에서 낙원의 이편에 서서 낙원의 저편을 바라보는 예술적 사유의 흔적들이고, 편린(片鱗)들이다.

낙원의 이편전은 이러한 낙원의 문제와 연관하여 자연, 도시, 인간에 관한 예술적 사유를 담보하고 있는 한국작가들의 작품과 일본작가의 작품을 4개의 섹션으로 나누어 구성하였다. <섹션 1>에서는 ‘공존의 시선(View of Coexistence)’이란 소주제로 자연환경, 현대문명, 역사적 유산에 관한 현재적 해석을 다룬 오용길, 민정기, 전동화, 이이남의 작품을 선별했다.
다음으로 <섹션 2>에서는 ‘회상의 영토(Territory of Reminiscence)’라는 소주제로 현대적 삶의 공간에서 잃어버린 시적 정서나 이미 흘러간 과거의 흔적을 새롭게 반추시키는 작품들에 주목하였다. 유근택, 노충현, 정재호, 안보미의 작품이 그러한 태도의 중요한 측면을 담지(擔持)하고 있다고 보았다.
마지막 장인 <섹션 3>은 ‘피안에의 응시(Staring at Nirvana)’라는 소주제로 현실세계에 발을 딛고 사는 숙명적 인간 존재로서 실존적 자각, 인간의 내면탐구, 환영 너머의 세계를 향한 응시와 같은 주제의식을 가진 윤석남, 김근중, 유정혜의 작품을 선정하였다.
2층의 특별전인 <섹션 4>는 ‘도코로자와에서 온 이야기(Artistic Thoughts from Tokorozawa)’ 라는 열린 소주제로 도코로자와시 초대작가 5인의 작품을 선보이는 방이다. 토야 시게오, 이토 마코토, 바바 켄타로, 오아나 코토에, 모리타 가코가 각기 다른 개성있는 형식의 조각, 회화작품을 통해 자신의 독자적 조형세계를 펼쳐 보이고 있다.
《낙원의 이편》전은 동시대 낙원의 이정표를 되돌아보는 현대미술전으로 기획되었다. 안양(安養)이라는 지명이 가진 불교에서의 ‘안양정토(安養淨土)’의 의미를 현대미술가의 조형적 사유에 기대어 한국, 일본작가들의 작품을 통해 비추어 보고자 했다. 이번 전시를 통해 안양시 해외자매도시간의 교류전이 더욱 활발하게 전개되고 상호간의 예술, 사회, 문화를 더욱 깊이 이해하는 계기가 된다면 기획의 의미는 오랫동안 살아있을 것이다.

[Overview of Exhibition]
This exhibition is the first cultural & arts exchange exhibition by and between the cities that have sisterhood relationship with Anyang City. Anyang City has 7 sister cities in 6 countries. Since 1989, Anyang City has kept on establishing sisterhood relationship with City of Hampton (VA), the US, City of Garden Grove (CA), the US, Tokorozawa City, Japan, Weifang City, China, Ulan-Ude City, Russia, Sorocaba City, Brazil, and Naucalpan City, Mexico. As a result of comprehensive review on the exhibition planned last year in the aspects of planning direction, artist research, and budget, Anyang City decided to have the first exchange exhibition with Tokorozawa City, Japan.
I thought paradise has three kinds of territoriality in human thought as follows. Assuming the existence of paradise as substantive original form, it can be divided into this side of paradise and the other side of paradise with the visible paradise as the center. This side of the paradise is a world of middle way that we never reach in spite that we yearn for and dream of it. This exhibition is a trace and a part of the artistic thought standing on this side of paradise and watching the other side of paradise, taking this discernment as a milestone.
In consideration of this issue related to paradise, the exhibition “This Side of Paradise” was designed to have 4 sections with the works of Korean and Japanese artists who have pursued the artistic thoughts on the issues of paradise, nature, cities and human beings. First, for the “Section 1” with a sub-theme of ‘View of Coexistence,’ selected were the works of Oh Yong-gil, Min Joung-ki, Chun Dong-hwa, and Lee Lee-nam that deal with the current interpretation of natural environment, modern civilization, and historical heritage. Next, the “Section 2” with a sub-theme of ‘Territory of Reminiscence’ is paying attention to the works that ruminate newly on the poetic emotion lost in the space of modern life and on the traces of the past that have already passed. The works of Yoo Geun-taek, Roh Choong-hyun, Jung Jae-ho, and Ahn Bo-mee contain the important aspects of such attitude. For the last “Section 3” with the sub-theme of ‘Staring at Nirvana,’ selected were the artists who have the sense of subjects such as existential awareness as a fatal being living in this actual world, inward research of human beings and contemplation on the world beyond the fantasy. The works of Yoon Suk-nam, Kim Keun-joong, and Yoo Joung-hye have the clear faults of such conceptual strata. In the special exhibition “Section 4” with the sub-theme of “Artistic Thoughts from Tokorozawa” held on the 2nd floor, you can enjoy the works of the invited artists from the Tokorozawa City. Toya Shigeo, Ito Makoto, Baba Kentaro, Oana Kotoe, Morita Kako show their own formative worlds through the characterful forms of sculptures and paintings.
The exhibition “This Side of Paradise” was designed as a contemporary art exhibition to look back on the milestones of paradise in these days. I tried to illuminate the meaning of “Anyang, the Land of Happiness,” which is derived from the place name Anyang in the context of Buddhism, relying on the formative thoughts of the contemporary artists and through the works of Korean and Japanese artists. If this exhibition serves as an opportunity for Anyang City and its sister cities to promote their exhibition exchanges more actively in the future and to have better mutual understanding on their art, society, and culture, the meaning of this planning will be alive for a long time.
