44개의 요술봉과 색동 아우라가 전하는 희망의 메시지

오늘날의 인류는 펜데믹으로 인해 일상이 바뀌는 과정을 경험하며 새로운 삶의 방식에 적응해 나가고 있다. 그 어떤 산업혁명보다 빠르게 사회구조와 질서를 바꿔버린 펜데믹은 세상을 언택트(Un-Tact)와 온택트(On-Tact) 시대로 만들어 버렸고 이러한 사회적 단절은 문화 지형의 변화로 이어졌다. ‘사회적 거리두기‘가 장기화되면서 관객을 맞이할 수 없는 문화예술공간은 온라인에 무대를 만들고자 AR 기술을 통한 새로운 전시 방법 개발에 몰두하고 있다. 이렇듯 예술적 향유 기회의 축소와 채널의 재구성은 관객과의 소통 방식에 큰 변동을 일으켰으며, 플랫폼의 변화는 작품 프레젠테이션 방식 변화의 요구로 이어지고 디지털 매체에 관심을 집중시켰다. 

이에 적극적인 반응을 하고 있는 작가 도로시 엠 윤은 다양한 AR기술을 이용해 온/오프라인을 넘나드는 인터랙티브 아트를 선보이고 있다. 모바일 미디어뿐만 아니라 Nreal glass를 통한 공연이 결합된 Mix Reality, 인터랙티브 모션캡쳐 등 첨단 디지털 기술을 즉각적으로 수용하고 가상현실(VR)에서 증강현실(AR), 혼합현실(Mixed Reality)까지 최신 디지털 기술을 활용한 도로시 엠 윤의 세계의 확장은 온/오프라인의 호환을 넘어 그 경계를 해체하고 무한으로 증식될 수 있는 가능성을 실험하고 있다. 이러한 실험은 미래세대를 염두에 둔 다양한 세대와 유연한 소통을 하기 위함으로 그 대상엔 MZ세대(밀레니얼 세대와 Z세대(1995~2004년생)를 합친 신조어)가 있다. IMF 이후 일 중심의 집단주의적 세계에 워라밸(Work & Life Balance)를 중시하는 합리적 개인들, MZ세대가 등장하면서 여가와 사교에 큰 변화를 가져왔다. 취미가 다양해지며 삶의 가치에 중요한 부분을 차지하게 되었고, SNS를 통해 자신의 일상을 공유하거나 타인들과 네트워킹한다. 삶의 주무대가 온라인 세상으로 확장 혹은 이동되고 있다고 말할 수 있다.

도로시 엠 윤은 과거 암 투병 과정의 약물 치료를 하던 중 모노톤의 일상이 순간적으로 화려한 찰나로 변하는 환각적 경험을 하였고 그 경험은 매우 짧았지만 강렬했고 희망적이었다. 이 작업은 그 초현실적 기억과 경험을 기반으로 한 것으로 색동을 통해 그 찰나의 환희를 표현하였다. 색동은 고구려벽화에 처음 등장하며, 삼국시대부터 하늘과 땅을 연결하는 중계자의 역할을 하였다. 요술봉 역시 여러 비현실적 애니메이션에 등장하면서 현실의 소망을 비현실(가상)의 세계에서 구현하는 도구로 사용되었다. 작가는 이러한 중계적, 주술적 의미를 지닌 두 도구를 결합하고, 여기에 뉴 테크놀로지를 더하여, 코로나19 이후의 시대에 새로운 전시와 공연의 형태를 제시한다. 본 전시는 관객들에게 새로운 예술적 체험을 통해 코로나 블루를 극복할 수 있는 희망적 메시지를 전달하고 색동 요술봉과 함께 색동 요정들의 안내를 받으며 꿈같은 세계로의 여행을 제안한다.

'12개의 자수 별자리 색동 요술봉'과 'AR 색동 요술봉'

<44개의 요술봉과 색동 아우라>는 2019년 베니스비엔날레에서 선보인 12개의 띠와 12개의 별자리 자수 색동 요술봉을 3D 요술봉으로 변환시킨 작업이다. 자수로 박제 시킨 '요술봉'이라는 심볼을 가상 세계에서 살아 움직이며 동화 속 세상을 언제든 현실로 소환시키는 그야말로 생명을 가진 '요술봉'으로 재탄생 시켰다. 

전시장 입구에 설치된 모니터에는 'THIS MOMENT IS MAGIC'이라는 자수 메시지와 함께 오늘 도로시가 선사할 환상적 세계로의 여행을 안내하는 인트로 영상 <Time Magic stick and 7days>가 상영되고 있다. 하늘과 땅, 세상이 만들어지는 7일의 과정을 요술봉의 마법으로 묘사한 영상은 당신이 곧 마법같은 시간을 경험할 것이라는 암시를 준다.

<24개 색동요술봉과 색동아우라>

전시장에 중앙에 배치된 커다란 QR 코드를 모바일 폰으로 찍어 애플리케이션을 실행시키면 전시장 안에 요술봉을 찾는 인터렉티브 AR이 펼쳐진다. 색동 요술봉을 찾는 여행은 ‘여행을 함께할 동물 친구와 여행에서 필요한 것’을 고르라는 지시문으로 시작된다. 선택을 마친 관람객은 두 개의 선택어를 가지게 되고 그 선택어에 매칭되는 두 개의 요술봉을 찾는 게임이 시작되면 현실의 빈 공간에서 부유하는 요술봉들 중 자신의 선택어와 매칭되었던 요술봉을 찾아야 한다. 임무가 완료되면, 전체 요술봉이 색동으로 변하고 드디어 작가가 의도하였던 ‘화려한 찰나의 경험’을 하게 된다. 모바일 폰과 연결된 Nreal glass를 착용하면 홀로그램으로 색동 아우라 Magic Moment의 세계를 직관할 수 있다. 이 여정에는 도로시가 마련한 특별한 이벤트도 준비되어 있는데 당신의 여행을 축하하는, 혹은 안내하는 색동 요정들이 등장하는 공연이다. 3D 모션캡쳐로 구현된 가상의 무용수와 실제 무용수가 함께 춤을 추며 가상공간과 현실공간이 마침내 일치하는 초현실적 풍경이 펼쳐진다. 허상 같던 꿈이 실현되는 순간을 표현한 공연은 축복을 기원하는 의식과 같다.

대형 프로젝터가 설치된 방에서는 색동 세상으로 떠나기 위한 더욱 적극적인 퍼포먼스가 요구된다. 3차원 패턴의 모션 그래픽 기술을 이용한 동작 센서들이 움직임을 읽고 모니터 속 관람객의 모습 위로 색동 아우라가 펼쳐진다. 여기에 자신이 찾은 두 개의 색동 요술봉이 자신에게 투영되고 스스로가 희망의 요술봉이 되어 이 이야기는 마무리 된다. 이 경험은 '또 다른 희망과 꿈'을 암시하며 부적처럼 간직할 수 있는 보상으로서 희망의 메시지를 담은 부적을 얻게 된다. 이 부적은 SMS나 이메일로 전송할 수 있어 색동 세계 여행의 기념품으로 남는다.

44 Magic Sticks and Saek-dong Aura

Humanity today is adjusting to a new lifestyle and experiencing changes within daily life due to the pandemic. Compared to any industrial revolution, the pandemic has rapidly changed the world’s social structures and orders into an era of Un-tact and On-tact. Ultimately, the impact of social disconnection has led to a transformation in the world’s cultural topography. With the reorganization of channels and the reduction of occasions for artistic enjoyment, communicating with the audience has undergone a shift as the change in platform demands a presentation of works targeting digital media.

Positively responding to the rapid adaptations, artist Dorothy M. Yoon utilizes various AR technologies to traverse the online and offline through her interactive art. In addition to mobile media, Yoon presents performances through “Nreal glasses” to embrace advanced digital technologies such as Mix Reality, interactive motion capture, and the latest digital technologies from virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), to mixed reality. The expansion of Dorothy M. Yoon’s world goes beyond the compatibility of online/offline, dismantling its boundaries and experimenting with the possibility of infinite proliferation. With future generations in mind, these experiments intend to facilitate flexible communication among various age groups, targeting the MZ generation (a neologism combining millennials and the Z-generation (born 1995-2004)). The emergence of the MZ generation, consisting of rational individuals who value a work/life balance in the work-centered collectivist world after the IMF Foreign Currency Crisis, reshaped the way of social and leisure lifestyles. Hobbies have diversified and have become an essential part of life’s value, while one’s daily life is shared and networked with others through social media. Debatably, the main setting where life takes place is expanding, or perhaps, moving into the online world.

Dorothy M. Yoon had a hallucinatory experience on medication to fight cancer where her monotonous life momentarily changed into splendid rays of light. Although the occurrence was temporary, it is an eternal representation of strength and hope. Her work alludes to this surreal memory and experience by expressing the moment of delight through vivid saek-dong. Saekdong first appeared in Goguryeo mural paintings, playing the role of mediator by connecting the sky and the earth since the Three Kingdoms period. Likewise, the magic stick also appears in many fantastic animations as a tool for giving concrete form to one’s wishes in the unreal (virtual) world into the real world. The artist combines these two agents with relaying and magical meanings by adding new technology to present a new exhibition and performance manifestation in the post-COVID-19 era. Under the guidance of saek-dong fairies and the magic stick, this exhibition provides a hopeful message of overcoming corona blue to the audience by inviting them on a trip to a dream-like world through a new artistic experience.

‘12 Embroidery Constellation Saek-dong Magic Sticks’ and ‘AR Saek-dong Magic Stick’

<44 Magic Sticks and Saek-dong Aura> transforms the 12 strips and 12 constellationembroidered magic sticks presented at the 2019 Venice Biennale into three-dimensional magic sticks. The embroidered “magic stick” symbol is recreated and animated in the virtual world as a powerful “magic stick” that summons the fairy tale world to reality at any time.

Towards the exhibition space entrance, the installed monitor streams an introductory video <Time Magic Stick and 7 Days>. The embroidered phrase “THIS MOMENT IS MAGIC” guides the audience on a journey to Dorothy’s fantastic world. Alluding to Heaven, Earth, and the Seven Days of Creation, the video depicted with the magic stick’s spells foreshadows the audience’s magical

experience.

Using a mobile application to scan the QR code located in the center of the exhibition space, an interactive AR scavenger hunt for the magic stick begins. The search for the Saek-dong magic stick starts with instructions to choose ‘an animal friend to travel with and what you need on the trip.’ After completing the selection, the audience will have two assigned keywords that describe the two magic sticks they need to find among the multiple floating magic sticks visible in the AR application yet invisible in the real-world exhibition space. Once the mission is completed, the magic stick transforms into vibrant saek-dong, allowing the audience to encounter the artist’s “splendid momentary experience.” Wearing the “Nreal glasses” provided, one can intuitively see a hologram of the world of Magic Moment in a saek-dong aura. On this itinerary, Dorothy M. Yoon has also organized a special performance featuring colorful saek-dong fairies celebrating andguiding one’s enchanting journey. Virtual dancers embodied in 3D motion capture and dancers in the real world perform together, creating a surreal landscape where virtual and real worlds finally harmonize. Representing the moment when an illusory dream comes to life, the performance resembles a ritual of prayer for blessings.

In the space equipped with a large projector, the world of saek-dong requires a dynamic performance to explore it further. Motion sensors using three-dimensional patterned motion graphic technology read the audience’s movements and unfold saek-dong auras onto the viewer projected in the monitor. Here, the two saek-dong magic sticks one discovers are projected onto the viewer and concludes with each individual transforming into a magic stick of hope. This experience alludes to “another hope and dream” and rewards the audience with an amulet ofhope to keep. This amulet can be sent via SMS or email and thus remains a souvenir from traveling the world of saek-dong.

도로시 엠 윤은 이화여대 조소과와 런던 골드 스미스 대학 순수예술 석사를 졸업한 후 사진, 영상, 설치 등 다양한 매체를 활용하여 상상과 현실, 과거와 현재, 동양과 서양, 현실성과 비현실성을 넘나드는 작업을 진행해왔다. 최근에는 AR, 온라인 게임 등 미디어 매체로 그 영역을 확대하고 있다. 2019년 스와치 후원으로 2019년 베네치아 비엔날레 전시에 참여하였으며 2020년 스와치 본사와 한국인작가최초로 2종의 시계를 출시한바 있다.  

Dorothy M. Yoon graduated from the Department of Sculpture at Ewha Womans University and Master of Fine Arts at Goldsmith University in London, and uses various media such as photography, video, and installation to cross imagination and reality, past and present, East and West, reality and unreality. Has been going on. Recently, it is expanding its area to media such as AR and online games. Sponsored by Swatch in 2019, she participated in the exhibition of the 2019 Venice Biennale, and in 2020, the Swatch and the first Korean artist launched two watches.
