Kim En Joong

“빛”은 보편적으로 우리가 눈으로 볼 수 있는 색의 영역, 가시광선을 의미하지만 동시에 그 색과 파장으로 자연의 근원적 아름다움을 보여주는 주체입니다. 김인중 신부(베드로, 도미니코수도회)는 안료의 색을 빛처럼 선명하고 투명하게 표현하는 작가입니다.

1940년 충남 부여에서 출생한 김인중 신부는 서울대학교 미술대학원을 졸업한 후 스위스와 프랑스에서 미술과 신학을 공부하였습니다. 이후 1974년 서품을 받고 사제의 길을 걷기 시작하여 기도와 묵상, 그림 안에서 평생을 살아왔습니다. 그는 서예가였던 아버지의 영향과 성인이 되어 배우고 경험한 유럽의 예술 문화 등을 조화롭게 통합하여 동서양의 경계를 오가는 새로운 예술세계를 구축하였습니다. 그의 작품세계는 국내외에서 인정받아 프랑스 문화예술 공로 훈장 ‘오피시에’ 수훈, 제26회 가톨릭 미술상 특별상 수상 등으로 이어졌습니다.

캔버스와 유리 등 다양한 매개체를 통해 색채들을 자유로운 동세로 펼쳐놓은 화면은, 마치 운율이 있는 언어로 감정과 정서, 아름다움을 표현하는 언어의 예술인 “시”를 보는 듯한 감상을 줍니다. 존재의 근원과 진리에 대해 빛으로 그려낸 아름다운 시와 같은 그의 작품을 보며 우리의 삶도 한 편의 시와 닮지 않았나 생각해 봅니다. 삶의 모든 순간은 붓이 지나간 자리와도 같고, 다채로운 빛깔이 남긴 운율은 살아가고 있는 우리를 위한 기도가 됩니다.

이번 전시에서 한국천주교회의 순교 영성과 절두산순교성지에 대한 묵상을 바탕으로 한 김인중 신부의 신작 22점을 포함하여 총 46점의 작품을 만날 수 있습니다. 모든 작품에 제목을 짓지 않는 김 신부는 자신의 작품을 만나는 이들에게 그저 형태와 색에 조용히 귀 기울이기를 청합니다. 작품과 소통하며 위로와 울림, 더 나아가 진리로 향하고자 하는 마음에 빛의 시 한 구절을 담아갈 수 있는 시간 되시기 바랍니다.

“Light” universally refers to the range of colors visible to the human eye (the visible spectrum), yet at the same time, it is also the agent that reveals the fundamental beauty of nature through those colors and wavelengths. Father Kim En Joong (Peter, The Order of Preachers) is an artist who expresses the colors of pigments as vividly and transparently as light.

Father Kim En Joong, born in 1940 in Buyeo, Chungcheong- nam-do, graduated from the Graduate School of Fine Arts at Seoul National University and went on to study art and theology in Switzerland and France. After being ordained in 1974, he began walking the path of priesthood, dedicating his life to prayer and meditation, and painting. He harmoniously integrated the influence of his father, who was a calligrapher, with the Western art and culture he learned and experienced as an adult, and others, thereby establishing a new artistic world that traverses the boundaries between East and West. His achievements have been recognized both in Korea and abroad, including being named Officier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in France in 2010 and receiving the Special Award at the 26th Catholic Art Awards in 2023.

The composition in which he unfolds colors in free movements across various media such as canvas, glass, and others gives the impression of viewing “poetry,” the art of language that expresses emotions, sentiments, and beauty with rhythmical language. His works appear like beautiful poems painted with light about the origin of existence and the truth. Perhaps our lives themselves are a kind of poem. Each moment of life is like a brushstroke’s trace, and the rhythm of its many colors becomes a prayer for those of us who live.

In this exhibition, 22 new works by Father Kim En Joong, created in reflection on the martyrdom spirituality of the Korean Catholic Church and the Jeoldusan Martyrs’ Shrine, are being presented for the first time, along with nine stained glass pieces and other works, totaling 46 in all. He does not give titles to his works and asks those who encounter his art simply to listen quietly to the forms and colors. May your time in dialogue with his works be one in which you carry away a verse of the poetry of light ― offering consolation, resonance, and a desire to move toward truth.
