전소정: 오버톤 Overtone

바라캇 컨템포러리는 오는 11월 8일부터 2024년 1월 7일까지 전소정 작가의 첫 개인전 《오버톤 Overtone》를 개최합니다.

그간 ‘소리’에 대한 작가의 천착이 더욱 깊게 있게 다루어진 세계라고 할 수 있는 이번 전시는 국립 현대미술관에서 선보이는 올해의 작가상 2023 신작 영상 <싱코피 Syncope>(2023)와 연장선에 있으며, 특히 바라캇 컨템포러리 전시를 위해 처음으로 개발한 AR 앱인 <싱코피> 와 세 채널 신작 영상 작품 <오버톤 Overtone>(2023), 조각 작품 <에피필름I Epiphyllum I> (2023), <에피필름III Epiphyllum III> 을 통해 시간과 장소, 현실과 가상 공간을 초월하며 조각과 영상, 디지털 데이터 사이의 유기적인 관계망을 만들어 내는 흥미로운 관점을 제안할 예정입니다. 이를 통해 “국경을 넘는 신체의 속도, 데이터의 속도, 식물의 이동속도, 언어의 속도” 등을 겹쳐 보면서, 그 가능성의 소리를 따라 아시아 여성들의 이야기와 연대, 그 ‘물질적인 소리’와 ‘음색’에서 찾기를 시도합니다.

전소정의  영상<오버톤>은 소리를 따라 남북을 가로질러 이동했던 가야금 연주자 박순아의 여정을 중심으로 한·중·일 아시아의 금(琴) 연주그룹 고토히메(KOTOHIME)와 이들의 연주를 위해 한국과 독일, 과테말라에서 거주하며 활동하는 세 명의 작곡가가 모여 ‘세 개의 악장, 음악의 길이, 템포’ 만을 합의한 채 각각 가야금, 고토, 고쟁을 위한 곡을 만들면서 소리를 통해 국경을 넘어 새로운 세계를 창조하기를 시도합니다.

조각과 조각 사이, 스크린과 스크린 사이의 틀어진 빈 공간을 떠도는 여음과 진동, 그 떨림의 존재를 듣고, 감각하고, 상상하는 이번 전소정의 개인전 《오버톤 Overtone》에 많은 관심 부탁드립니다.

작가소개

전소정(b.1982)은 서울을 기반으로 활동하는 미디어 아트 작가이다. 서울대학교 조소과와 연세대학교 커뮤니케이션 대학원에서 미디어아트학과 석사학위를 받았다. 작가는 영상·사운드·조각·출판 등 다양한 매체를 바탕으로 현재에 대한 새로운 인식을 환기시키는 비선형 시공간을 창조하거나, 물리적 경계의 전환이 일상의 감각적 경험을 통해 어떻게 관통하는지 탐구하는 작업을 한다. 

특히 모더니즘의 변화의 속도로부터 주변부로 밀려난 인물들, 장소, 사물에 초점을 맞추며 이들의 삶 속에서 예술적 행위를 발견하고 과연 일상의 삶 가운데 예술이란 무엇인가?를 질문하는 <예술 하는 습관 The Habit of Art>(2012), <일상의 전문가 Daily Experts>(2009 ~ 2014)시리즈, <먼저 온 미래 Early Arrival of Future>(2015), <이클립스 I, II Eclipse I, II>(2020) 등 부터 <광인들의 배 The Ship of Fools>(2016), <Interval. Recess. Pause>(2017), <절망하고 탄생하라 Despair to be Reborn>(2020)처럼 현실세계와 가상의 세계 또는 영상 매체를 통해 소리, 냄새, 색, 물리적 촉각 등과 같은 매체적 전유가 일어나며 생성하는 허구적 공간이 스크린 안에서 직조되며 선형적 시공간을 교란시키는 작업을 해왔다.

전소정은 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 북서울시립미술관, 스위스 베른 미술관, 팔레 드 도쿄 미술관, 아뜰리에 에르메스, 아르코 미술관, 백남준 아트센터, 파리 빌라 바실리프, 제11회 광주비엔날레, 삼성 리움미술관, 오사카 국립미술관, 울산시립미술관 등 국내외 다수의 기관의 개인전 및 단체전에 참여했다

전소정은 현재 국립현대미술관 올해의 작가상2023 후보자로 선정되었으며, 제14회 송은미술대상, 제 18회 에르메스 재단 미술상, 2016년 광주비엔날레 눈 예술상을 수상하였다. 또한 그의 작품은 한네프켄 재단, 울리지그 컬렉션, 오사카 국립미술관, 국립현대미술관, 서울 시립미술관, 삼성 리움 미술관, 경기도 미술관, 부산현대미술관, 부산시립미술관, 울산 현대미술관 등 국내외 다수의 기관에 소장되어 있다.

바라캇 컨템포러리

그간 전 세계적으로 주목받는 동시대 미술을 향유하고 향후의 방향성을 예견하는 전시 프로그램을 선보여온 바라캇 컨템포러리 전시 공간이 바라캇 서울 소격동(서울시 종로구 삼청로 58-4)으로 이전되었습니다. 

나아가 2024년 초순부터는 본관에 프로젝트 스페이스를 개관하고 새롭게 확장된 형태로 여러분께 인사드릴 예정입니다. 물리적인 공간의 개념을 확장하고 실험적인 예술 프로젝트 공간으로 구축되는 바라캇 컨템포러리의 프로젝트 스페이스는 세계 유수의 작가들이 선사할 예술 실천을 보다 집중적으로 조명하고 동시대의 예술 담론을 유연하게 발전시킬 수 있는 예술 실험의 장으로 기능하고자 합니다.

Sojung Jun: Overtone

Barakat Contemporary is proud to present a solo exhibition of new works by Sojung Jung, Overtone, from November 8 to January 7, 2024.  

Probing into Sojung Jun’s ongoing investigation of  ‘sound’, the artist launches Syncope for the first time, an AR application developed especially for her first exhibition for Barakat Contemporary as an extension of the new film presented at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (MMCA), Seoul for the Korea Artist Prize 2023. Featuring a new series of sculptures entitled Epiphyllum I (2023) and Epiphyllum III (2023) along with the new three channel film Overtone, Jun proposes an interesting perspective that enables an organic network of relationship between sculptures, video, and digital data that transcends time and space, and the real and virtual. The nexus of the exhibition further plays with the term ‘overtone’ by overlapping the speed and displacement of body, plants, data, and language that cross borders as essential metaphors within the narratives of Asian women in pursuit of finding sound and other possibilities. 

Overtone (2023) revolves around the journey of Soon A Park, a gayageum player who has traveled across North and South Korea in search of sound. For the production of the new film, three composers from Korea, Germany, and Guatemala collaborated to compose three songs, with predetermined length and tempo each for gayageum, koto, and guzheng, which are performed in accordance by KOTOHIME, the East Asian zither ensemble who play together to embody the theme of crossing borders.

The presence of lingering reverberation, vibration, and tremolo weaving through each sculpture and in between screens act as a connective thread, inviting the viewers for an immersive experience of the works through the keen act of listening, sensing, and imagining throughout the run of the exhibition. 

About the artist

Sojung Jun (b.1982, Busan) is an artist based in Seoul, South Korea. She has received her BFA in Sculpture from Seoul National University and MFA in Media Art from the Graduate School of Communication & Art at Yonsei University. Using the language of video, sound, sculpture, and writing, the artist is interested in creating a nonlinear space-time to awake a new awareness of history and the present or in how the changes made in physical boundaries penetrate daily sensorial experiences. In particular, she has produced works that weave and crisscross with her personal experiences by paying attention to people standing on the boundary amid the ruins of modernity and invisible voices – including The Habit of Art (2012), Daily Experts (2009 ~ 2014), Early Arrival of Future (2015), Eclipse I, II (2020), The Ship of Fools (2016), Interval. Recess. Pause (2017), and Despair to be Reborn (2020). 

Jun has held solo and group exhibitions at a number of institutions including National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Kunstmuseum Bern, Nam June Paik Art Center, Atelier Hermès, ARKO Art Center, Palais de Tokyo, Villa Vassilieff, 11th Gwangju Biennale, Seoul Museum of Art, Buk-Seoul Museum of Art, The National Museum of Art, Osaka, Leeum Samsung Museum, Seoul, Ulsan Art Museum. She is the recipient of the Hermès Foundation Missulsang 2018, Villa Vassilieff Pernod Ricard Fellowship, Paris, France 2016 and Noon Art Prize, Gwangju Biennale 2016. Jun’s works are in the permanent collection of leading art galleries and institutions around the world such as Han Nefkens Foundation, Uli Sigg Collection, MMCA National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Korea), Seoul Museum of Art, Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, The National Museum of Art, Osaka (JP), Ulsan Museum of Art (KR), Busan Museum of Art (KR), Museum of Contemporary Art, Busan (KR), and Gyeonggi Museum of Art (KR).
