에이메이 카네야마와 김 윤기의 2인전 <Nothing About Nothing>은 대상에 대한 추상적인 해석을 통해 미적 담론을 생산해내는 한국과 일본의 두 젊은 작가로 기획되었다.

두 작가는 대상에 대한 최소한의 개입만으로 작품 앞의 우리에게 더할 나위 없이 아름답지만 해석이 난해한, 어쩌면 인식의 영역 안으로 받아들여 지기를 거부하는, 낯선 당혹감을선사한다.

일본 작가 에이메이 카네야마는 홍콩에서 열린 아트바젤 아트페어와 한국에서 열린 몇 번의 전시를 통해서 자신의뚜렷한 재능을 선보인 작가이다. 이번에 선보일 그의 최근 작업은 이전보다 더욱 실험적이고 대담해진 자신의세계관을 고스란히 보여 주고 있다. 마치 삶에 의문을 품는 행위를 보여 주는 듯한 에이메이 카네야마의실험적인 최근 작업은 이번 전시에서  다양한층위를 지닌 작품을 통해서 보여 지게 될 것이다. 한국을 기반으로 활동하는 에이메이 카네야마는 동시대가장 주목해야 할 아티스트 중 한 명 임에 틀림없다.

한편, 김 윤기는 음악, 회화, 문학 등 장르를 구분하지 않고 다양한 영역에서 예술 행위를 구축하는 작가이다.그의 재기 발랄하고도 열정적인 작업은 그의 홈페이지를 통해 대중에게 수시로 공개가 되고 있다. 김윤기는 다양한 방식으로 대상을 해체하고 재현해나가는 한편 그가 주변에서 생산해 낼 수 있는 도구로 작업을 해나가는 생활밀착형 작가이기도 하다. 작품이기 이전에 그의 삶, 모습,독백과도 같은 그의 일상에서 건져 올린 생생한 작품들은 현존하는 동시대 작품 중 그 어디에도 속하지 않는 가장 독특한 지점에 있을것이다.

어느 시집에서 영감을 얻은 ‘Nothing About Nothing’ 이라는타이틀은 두 작가의 작품을 관통하는 미니멀한 삶의 순간들이 곧 세계의 전체이며, 이미 사라진 ‘없음’에 대한 현존하는 ‘없음’을 창조해 나가는 작가들의  세계관을 잘 나타내고 있다는 점에서 붙여졌다. Nothing(없음)의 공백을 향한 그들의 텅 빈 의식을 통해서오늘도 자신의 삶과 불가능한 타협을 지닌 채  ‘작가란 무엇인가?’ ‘예술과 비예술의 경계는 무엇인가?’ 라는 질문을 던지게 만드는 두 작가의 작품 앞에 오래도록 머물러져 지기를 바란다.

 

The duet exhibition, Nothing AboutNothing, features two young Korean and Japanese artists, Eimei Kaneyama andYoonkee Kim, who create artistic discourses through abstract interpretation oftheir subjects.

 

Both artists place the viewer in a strangeencounter with the artwork that is aesthetically beautiful but definitivelyabstract, perhaps resisting to enter a perceptive realm.

 

The Japanese artist, Eimei Kaneyama, hasalready established his talent through various exhibitions at Art Basel HongKong and in Korea. Nothing About Nothing shows his recent works thathave increasingly become experimental and reflect his bold artistic outlook. Asif questioning the meaning of life, Kaneyama’s recent experimental work will beshown through his multi-faceted artworks. Based in Korea, Eimei Kaneyama is oneof the must-watch contemporary artists.

 

On the other hand, Yonkee Kim encompassesvarious genres including music, painting, and literature. His vivid andpassionate works are constantly updated and accessible to the public on hiswebsite. While Yoonkee Kim dismantles and reinterprets a subject thru variousmethods, he also works with the surrounding, ready-made tools. Prior tobecoming a piece of art, the ready-made tools were embedded within his life,appearance, and daily monologue; the objects ultimately create vivid artworksthat are most unique and outside of any categories within the contemporary art.

 

Inspired by the title of a poetry book, NothingAbout Nothing was given to represent the artists’ artistic outlooks thatshare the minimal moments of daily life which ultimately sum up to be the worldas a whole. The title also symbolizes the artists’effort to create the concurrent “nothingness” about the already nonexistent “nothingness.” We hope that viewers linger with questions “what is an artist?” and “what is the distinction between art and non-art?” in front of the artworks that convey empty consciousness of theempty space that is nothingness.
