신수혁 Soohyeok Shin

2GIL29 GALLERY has mounted flow, the exhibition ofSoohyeok Shin(b. 1967), an assistant professor of Hong Ik University. This isone of the closing exhibitions of 2015. The layered visual depth of his workleads us to “immersion,” and the “flow” of serene thought makes us feel thesublime. The subject taken of this exhibition is the diverse inner streams hiswork offers. Shin suddenly left Korea to study in Japan after graduating fromthe Hong Ik University Department of Painting and its graduate school andreceived a doctorate in painting from Tokyo University of the Arts. He startedworking in earnest with his first solo show after coming back to Korea in 2009.His work is a study on space and time and light and place where an individual’ssituation and experience are remembered and reminisced on through the fluid,reconstructed scenes of a city, an indicator of mundane life. Whereas hisprevious pieces were explored the nature of the individual and society througha persistent observation and investigation of old buildings and commonenvironments in a city, his latest works of 2015 display simplified depictionsof the frames of buildings. Upon closer examination we realize this concept isfurther expanded. He discloses the multilayered structure of meaning using atechnique of embodying form by piling up layers in consecutive order afterthinly applying oil paints. This structure realizes the flow of non-visualmoments, forming a sort of network. In his works, buildings that seem to floatin a vacuum fill his canvas or some parts are reproduced. The buildings lead toa reconsideration of the meanings of reality and unreality, border andimagination, and representation and gaze as things whose sphere is extended tothe space of imagination and mental images beyond a physical space. Man or lifeis formed with memories and the open world with infinite encounters with thepast. The buildings he represents in his work are not mere perceptions of thepast but a chain of an infinite past existing together with the present andeven including the future. Shin’s differentiated research on light, color, andspace discloses self-reference and autonomy, enabling viewers to feel the flowof fluid perception and the expansion of infinite senses.

2GIL29 GALLERY에서는 홍익대학교 미술대학 조교수로 재직 중인 신수혁 (1967년생) 작가의 초대전 ‘flow’ 를 마련했다. 홍익대 회화과와 동 대학원, 도쿄예술대학 회화과 박사과정에서 학위를받은 작가는  20009년 귀국후 첫 개인전을 시작으로 본격적인 작품 활동을 시작한다. 그의 작품은 일상적인 도시 속에서 경험한 시간과공간에 대한 기억들을 끊임없이 탐구하는 작업이다. 도시의 오래된 건축물과 익숙한 환경을 관찰하고 기억함으로써개인과 사회의 본질을 탐색하는 작업의 연장선인 이번 이길이구갤러리 전시는 건축물 전체의 골조를 지우고 더욱 단순화하여 표현하고 있다. 화면을 유화로 얇게 칠한 후 순차적으로 층을 쌓아 올리면서 형상을 구현해내는 작가의 기법은 현실과 비현실을넘나들며 의미의 중층 구조를 드러낸다. 그 구조는 비시각적 순간의 흐름을 회화 표면 위에 일종의 네트워크를이루며 드러낸다. 여러겹의 레이어를 두른 포개어진 블루의 시각적 깊이감은 관람자로 하여금 몰입과 사유의흐름으로 어느새 숭고함 마저 느끼게 한다. 이러한 작가 내면의 다양한 흐름을 경험하는 것이 이번 전시의주제이기도 하다. 남겨진 건축물들은 화면을 다 채우기도 하고 일부만이 재현되어 있기도 한다. 그 건축물들은 단지 물리적 장소를 넘어 가상과 심상의 공간으로 확장 된 것으로 현실과 비현실, 경계와 가상, 재현과 시선의 의미를 재고하게 한다. 인간, 생명은 이미 그 자체가 기억으로 이루어져 있으며 과거와의무한한 만남으로 열린 체계이다. 현재와 과거를 절대적으로 동시적인 것으로 보았던 프랑스의 관념론 철학자 베르그송(Henri Bergson, 1859∼1941)처럼 그의 작품 속에 재현되어 있는 건축물들은 단순히 지나간 지각이 아니라 현재와함께하는 무한한 과거의 연쇄 그리고 미래까지도 포함되어 우리 곁에 남아 있다. 이렇듯 빛, 색, 공간에 대한 차별된 작가의 연구는 자기 참조성과 자율성을 강하게 드러내면서도 관람자로 하여금 유동적인 지각의 흐름과 무한한감각의 확장을 느끼게 한다.
