아티스트 김홍록은 Raul Bussot과 2011년 12월에 만났습니다.

Bussot 가족은 20년 전 쿠바에서 뗏목을 타고 미국 마이에미로 건너가 정착한 탈 쿠바 미국인 가족입니다.

Bussot 가족은 자유를 찾기 위해 1993년 3월 25일 비밀리에 만든 나무 보트를 타고 미국 키웨스트를 향하여 플로리다 해협을 건넜습니다. 하루 이틀이면 도달할 수 있는 거리였지만 태풍을 만나 그들의 뗏목은 5일간 약 600km를 표류하였고 미국 웨스트펌비치에서 미국 해양 경찰에 의해 구조되었습니다.

김홍록은 Raul이 5세에 겪었던 당시의 경험이 그의 인생에 어떠한 영향을 주었는지에 대한 궁금증으로 인터뷰를 시작하였습니다.

30일까지 전시장에 설치한 뗏목 위에서 김홍록은 Raul과 함께 당시 5일간의 체험을 재현 합니다.

어느 때보다 급속하게 변화하는 세상 속에서 안정을 추구하게 되는 요즘, 이 전시를 통해서 과감한 도전 속에 '현재의 나’는 어떠한가, 관람객 스스로를 조명해 보는 기회가 될 것입니다.

5일 동안의 퍼포먼스로 전시장을 24시간 개방합니다. 여러분들과 가깝게 대화하고자 오랜 시간 이 전시를 준비한 만큼 소중한 발걸음으로 자리를 빛내주셨으면 합니다.

Artist Kim Hong-Rok and Raul Bussot met in December 2011.

20 years ago, the Bussot family escaped Cuba on a raft. They crossed the ocean to settle in Miami, Florida as Americans.

In order to take their freedom on that day, March the 3rd of 1993, the Bussot family secretly built a raft and rode it across the Florida strait. Crossing the Florida strait to Key West would have taken no more than one or two days, but due to a storm at sea, the raft veered off course and took them 600km north where the U.S. Coast Guard rescued them 5 days after departure.

To learn exactly to what extent does an experience such as escaping from cuba at 5 years old have on one’s life was the main motivation for which Kim Hong-Rok began this interview.

Exactly 20 years later, from March 25 through 30 Kim Hong-Rok and Raul Bussot will recreate the experience. Together they will build the raft, install it in the gallery space and ride it for 5 days straight.  

Now more than ever, people pursue a sense of stability in a rapidly changing world. Through this exhibition the audience is presented with a bold challenge to reflect upon themselves.
