오늘의 영국 미술 그중에서도 젊은 아티스트 즉 YBA의 배경에는 여러가지 문화적 전략들이 기동하고 있다. 그중 하나는가 터너 프라이즈(Turner Prize)이다, 이 시상제도는 50세 이하로서 영국 내에서 두드러진 활동을 한 작가에게 2만 파운드(최근에는 25,000 파운드로 인상)를 수여하며 4-5명 정도로 노미네이트된 작가들을 전을 1개월 정도 전시를 거쳐 매년 12월 초 최종 1명을 선발한다.
이 제도는 영국현대미술의 새로운 가능성과 독자성을 전 세계에 알렸다는 의미와 함께 급격한 의식의 전환과 함께 트렌스 아방가르드와 포스트모더니즘 이후 줄곧 모색되어온 새로운 패러다임에 대한 적절한 지원책이었다;
1984년에 처음 개최된 터너 프라이즈는 무엇보다도 뉴욕 위주의 현대미술과 프랑스 위주의 근대미술에 대한 영국의 한계를 극복하는 차원에서 새로운 영국의 위상을 선언하기 시작한 가장 중요한 사건이었다.
시작되는 단계에서는 제 1회 최종 수상자가 말콤 몰리에게 돌아가면서 미국에서 활동하는 작가의 작품이 선정되었다는 점에서 크게 관심을 끌지 못했다.
하지만 이후 테이트 갤러리의 적극적인 지원과 차별화된 젊은 작가들의 과감한 발탁, 1991년 이후 채널4에 이어서 가디언(Guardian)지와의 협력관계를 형성하면서 채널4에서는 2003년부터 시상식 중개 방송까지 이어지는 등 이미 세계적으로 가장 권위 있는 상으로 인식되고 있다.
터너 프라이즈는 순수예술과 지원제도, 딜러, 미디어가 입체적으로 만들어낸 복합적인 작품으로서 비록 영국의 국내에 제한된 전시체계를 지니고 있기는 하지만 뉴욕 위주로 흘러온 현대미술의 편향적인 흐름을 넘어서서 영국이 주도하는 첨단 현대미술의 동향을 이해하는데 지표가 되고 있다.
이미 20년이 넘은 이 수상제도는 일부의 비판적 입장에도 불구하고 세계적으로도 최우선적인 벤치마킹의 대상이 될 정도로 유명세를 얻고 있다. 유럽 전역에서 뿐 아니라 아시아 지역에서도 수상 결과에 대하여 대단한 관심을 나타내고 있으며, 20여 년간 영국현대미술이 성장하는데 가장 핵심적인 역할을 해온 것으로 평가받고있다.
특히 이 제도는 언급한 바와 같이 작품들의 도발적이기까지 한 창의성도 관심을 집중시키지만, 수상 과정과 결과를 미디어를 통해 공개하는 등 소통체계의 다중코드를 개발했다는 점에서 관심을 집중시키게 되었다. 또한 난수표, 교란자와 같은 현대미술의 난해함을 넘어서서 애호가들에게 자연스럽게 다가설 수 있는 정도로 공격적이면서도 유연한 전략을 구사하였다는 점에서 획기적이기까지 하다.
